About 30 yards apart. It's rare to make more than 2 runs at a time, often it is only 1. Most of the score usually comes from 4's & 6's.

The number of balls, overs and innings depends on the type of cricket. Test matches last up to 5 days, all the way down to limited overs games with only 120 balls bowled per side.

I like fast and furious 20/20 matches

This is a bit off topic but there are many bizzare cricket 'terms' out in the cricketing world.....

"Its embarrassing when your bails go flying after someone bowls you out for a duck with an unexpected googly"

"Its a nice feeling when you bowl your first maiden over"

 No, but you can bowl maiden overs. (It's basically a "no hitter.")
Mick wrote:I like fast and furious 20/20 matches
To be honest, I'm not much of a sports fan. 20/20 are a bit fast for me though. If I had to choose, it would be an ODI probably, although I'd wouldn't watch the whole thing, just keep an eye on it.

Actually, the last game I watched happened to be the greatest ODI ever played, which was years ago now.

And in this thread no less. :D Ah, you never know what will happen on the Watch. :D

Finished the Second Pern Novel, and enjoying it pretty well. Skipped the third book of the First Trilogy for now, per Menolly's reccomended reading order, so, I am now working on the first book of the Second Trilogy.

Menolly, it's a good thing, your namesake was spoiled for me afterall, I never would have caught it. The Narrator is pronouncing it Men-uh-lee; I pronounce your Username as Meh-nawl-lee, and not seeing it written, it sounds like two totally different names

I pronounce it the same as you. I've never heard Anne's pronunciation, so I'm perfectly happy with however it is pronounced by whomever.

You've been awfully quiet on your impression of Pern so far...

I'm enjoying it. I like the Politics and the Dragon relationship with their riders and many of the characters are pretty terrific. I do hope as the Series gores along that a Human antagonist(s) pops up. Thread as the only antagonist will become same old same old if it goes on many more books.

Sorta quit with Pern because it was beginning to remind me of the Xanth or the Valdamar books, a bit formulaic.

My gods, I finally finished Blue Mars. I can't remember the last time I made so many excuses not to read. Between starting and finishing this book, I also played 170 odd hours of Oblivion.

And the sad thing is, all 3 of them have such great moments. It's just that they also have huge stretches of unutterable boredom.

Anyway, I'm doing a quick re-read of ASOIAF, during which I'll order TLD. Then I'll reread the last chrons before it arrives.

So right now I'm reading A Game of Thrones.

I met Anne McCaffrey at a book signing / "Lock-in chat" in Sheffield (UK) around 2000-ish and she told a story of a parent who named their daughter after her Menolly character, pronouncing her name men-owe-lee. After some colourful language, Anne pointed out it was pronounced Men-oll-ee.

She was quite a character and to the point 8O

Thanks good to hear how Anne McCaffrey pronounces it, so, it is pronounced as it's spelled (Two "L"s means soft "O")

Is that owe as in "you owe me" (long sounding "O")? I've never heard it that way. Usually it is almost always pronounced with the short "O" (an aww sound). The discrepancy I've usually found is on the syllabic accent. I pronounce it men-AWL-ly. But I've heard it pronounced as MEN-awl-y as well.

Reminds me of the difference between The Brits and Americans on The 3rd Doctor's real name. Brits typically pronounce it Pert-wee, whereas I've always heard Americans pronounce it Per-Twee

huh.

The first time I ever saw any 3rd Doctor shows was at a con where Jon Pertwee was a panel guest. So, I always say and hear the name as Pert-wee, because that's how he was introduced...

Huh...I'm fairly confident, but not positive, that it is men-AH-lee.

*nod*

The same sound as when I saw "AWW." Would rhyme with "dolly" or "molly."

I've had email from her years ago, and she was pretty talkative on occasion on the message boards on the worlds of Anne McCaffrey, but last I heard that was cut back severely about a decade ago, and with her passing, I don't know who your friend is friends with on Facebook. I am a fan of the page devoted to her on Facebook, though.
