Is there anybody else who loves this book, too? Frederik Pohl created a really catching atmosphere there, I think. One of the books I reread every year almost. Strong, ironic. And the underlying idea with the starships that go wherever they want and nobody can control them is brilliant IMHO. I once even envisioned an online game where people could sign up for explorings in Heeechee ships and hunt for resources, information and for the missing Heechee.

Yeah, I just finished the first book and I'm kinda sad it's over with. What a fun book! I am now onto the next one, Beyond the Blue Event Horizon. Hopefully it's as good. The mysterious Heechee really hook you.
It was the fetid halitus of the most diseased mortality condensed to its essence and elevated to the transcendence of prophecy, promise, suzerain truth—the definitive commandment of darkness.
