Is there anybody else who loves this book, too? Frederik Pohl created a really catching atmosphere there, I think. One of the books I reread every year almost. Strong, ironic. And the underlying idea with the starships that go wherever they want and nobody can control them is brilliant IMHO. I once even envisioned an online game where people could sign up for explorings in Heeechee ships and hunt for resources, information and for the missing Heechee.

LOVED it.
Spoiler
Loved the ending the way the robot 'justified' the deaths of the crew for the main character.
Well worth a read, people.

Excellent novel. However, I thought the two or three sequels were inferior.

I think it's pretty good too. As you said, ironic, fast paced, lot of ideas. You know, hiding inside a black hole and that sort of stuff. It comes back to me now...really good stuff...

Yeah, I just finished the first book and I'm kinda sad it's over with. What a fun book! I am now onto the next one, Beyond the Blue Event Horizon. Hopefully it's as good. The mysterious Heechee really hook you.
It was the fetid halitus of the most diseased mortality condensed to its essence and elevated to the transcendence of prophecy, promise, suzerain truth—the definitive commandment of darkness.
