There are two kinds of people in this world........

Post by peter »

......... Those who break into their boiled egg with a series of vertical blows, thereby reducing an area of shell to a fragmented wasteland that must then be picked of piecemeal and scattered over the plate and tablecloth for the rest of breakfast - or those who with a single and decisive 'swipe', decapitate their egg leaving a flat surface to proceed from and a 'divot' of white to be enjoyed with a sprinkle of salt at a later point. I am of the latter kind.

It was with this in mind that I decided to instigate a thread specifically with the intent of celebrating [or at least recording] these 'fracture lines' where for no logical reson, the human race separates itself into two distinct species where 'never the twain shall meet'. Posts can comment upon previous examples, cite new ones [which should of course begin with the words "There are two kinds ....etc, etc,"] or indeed be unrelated to the thread, any previous post or anything on the Watch whatsoever ["let each man march to his own drum, however measured or far away"'] - this is, after all, a democracy.

The thread also does honour to the origin of the phrase, not so much as used previously in casual speech, but 'culturaly', with it's 'meme' or unstated understanding of decicive finality, with which the phrase has become associated. This begins, as far as I can tell, with the book 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' by Joe Millard. The phrase was used on a number of occasions by Tuco the bandit, usually as he dealt an underhand blow to someone he was 'partnered' with at the time. The film of the same name raised the phrases 'self-contained' expressive form, when Eli Wallach [in his master role playing the aforementioned Tuco] used it repeatedly, only to have it thrown back at him by a gun toting Clint Eastwood [as the Man With No Name] who drawls at the shell-shocked bandit "There are two kinds of people in the world - those with shovels, and those who dig", he points his gun at Tuco, "You dig." I saw that film many times and loved it. Many years later I sat on a coach in India with my wife having just spent half a day at the incomparable Taj Mahal. As the last of us filtered back onto the coach, the indian tour guide who led our group picked up his microphone. "There are two kinds of people in the world," hesaid, "Those who have seen the Taj Mahal and those who have not. Welcome into the first group." [I have since heard that this is the standard phrase used by all tour guides to their groups following their Taj visits - so thus the 'meme' spreads from a nineteen sixties cowboy novel to a ninteen nineties indian tale.]

But back to eggs. I regard the bludgeoning of an egg into submission as an uncivilised act, worthy only of a simian, so it was with some shock I discovered my wife and daughter [of her previous marriage] doing just that this at our breakfast table this weekend. {'Ive probably seen it before, but it's never become a subject of conversation}. Now as I personally have no recollection as to why I 'swipe' rather than batter, and neither does my wife or her daughter, I can only assume this is a 'learned' behavioral trait, that becomes 'hardwired' into our psyche, before we are even aware this is happening. That there may be an element of 'class' differentiation as to which method is adopted I was too polite to point out [on the basis of wanting my wife to speak to me for the next three months] but this is speculation on my part. But anyway, like it or not, there are two kinds of people in the world......

[nb Of course I am fooling re the 'class' comment at the end here; if there were an ounce of 'class conciousness' in my wife, she would not be with an anthropoid oaf like me in a million years! ;) ]

So you eat your hard boiled egg with the shell still attached?
Like it's in it's own little shell bowl?
That's like eating food out of a trash can.

Your wife, daughter, myself and most of the civilized world prefer to eat our boiled eggs clean and not surrounded by any refuse.

Nature itself supplies a thin membrane between the shell and the egg that allows, no, it pleads for the shell to be cracked and broken so to allow an easy separation of what is edible and what is not.

A savage, like yourself, is proud about an imagined clean swipe or decapitation. As you should be, a small quick victory like that must be a very exciting moment in an otherwise monotonous day.

But those of us that lead a more robust and refined life prefer to take the time to prepare our meals to the point of perfection before eating.

Not a fancier of soft-boiled eggs myself, but Savor Rhee is, and since the sound of her early morning tapping on eggshell has been known to irritate Dam-sel, I bought her a whatsit that looks like an oversized cigar cutter to decapitate her eggs.

Hard boiled eggs are for picnic, soft boiled (4 1/2 minutes when at room temperature) eggs are for breakfast.

One decisive swipe is my prefered method, too.

Some people in Germany insist that you may only use the back of the spoon to crack the top of the egg, remove the shell from the top and then use your spoon to eat the egg. According to fine dining table manners knives are generally a no-go when eating boiled eggs.

This probaly stems from the times when fine dining knives were made of silver and the contact with the egg let the blades tarnish.

Also the "guillotine-method" is considered barbaric.

Hard-boiled eggs are best like hard-boiled detectives. Bedeviled. How they got that way...and where they disappear to after...you don't want to know. Do you?

Hard boiled eggs are best washed down with a libation that shares its name with the nickname of SRD's hard-boiled detective.

Even better without the egg!

OOOOHhhhh! Have you ever had one [or more....] from a bar jar?
I'm proudly shamed to admit I have [more than once...more than one kind]...and even more of both to admit that some places I've liked them...
Then again, when I was in Germany I had more than one pizza that had a great big fried egg in the middle of it. Freaking YUM! [especially one I had along with an eisbock that I'm pretty sure had something close to 20% alcohol...double ass yum.]

Hell, I'm pretty sure I had a beet/pickled one at some dive in Camden...it was the 3rd or 7th place we'd been...a place that made all the people who arrived with me get scared and run away, [and made me participate in some after-hours adventures that got me back to my hotel just as my fellow study abroad mates were heading to class...] It STARTED in Camden...not sure if STILL in Camden where I got the egg.
They have pickled/beet eggs in jars in Camden you know of peter?

Most definitely V. - no respecting 'fish and chip' shop would be without one! [What on earth was a cultured individual like you doing in Camden I ask myself? ;)]. Given that there is a reasonable sample of both swipers and bashers amongst us as a matter of interest can anyone actually remember how they developed their tecnique [it has to be learned doesn't it? - I wonder which came first (groan)].

Anyway - as to the thread being moved to the galley I can only say the following;-

There are two kinds of people in the world; those who read a post in it's [often tedious granted] entirety, and those who read the first six lines, loose interest and then MISS THE POINT ALTOGETHER! :x [;)].

[nb Of the clear superiority of the evolutionary line that led to the 'swipers' when compared to the knuckle-dragging antics of the 'bashers' I do not speak HLT ;) ]

Further thought; One imagines that in France [or perhaps around the breakfast tables of the English aristocracy] the act of 'swiping' would send a collective 'shiver' around the table.

Your original post is my favorite types of post.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who classify people into two distinct groups and those who do not.

Given that these two groups have an intersection which is the null set and their union comprises the entire human race, this classification forms an equivalence relation on humanity. Are the equivalence groups Abelian? If we can define two operations then we can extend these two groups into fields. This, of course, brings me around to my next observation--

[quote="nice guy peter"] [What on earth was a cultured individual like you doing in Camden I ask myself? ;)]./quote]

Actually dove into that cultural experience twice, about 20 years apart.

But on topic...at home [as opposed to when purchasing them from jars] I crack, roll, and peel. [[then either turn them to egg salad or devil them most of the time]] I don't think I ever saw a real person, in real life [as opposed to a film or novel] do it any other way till I was at least in my mid-20's.

Also, there are one kinds of people in the world: those who are exactly not the same as anyone else.

I hard-boil my eggs, then remove both shell and white entirely and discard them.

Then I salt the hard yolk and just eat that. :D

Oh, please -- basher?? Is that sort of language really necessary? I consider myself a delicate *tapper* when preparing to eat a soft-boiled egg. Never in a million years would it occur to me to decapitate the poor thing. Besides, once you've *gently* cracked the shell, you get the obsessive-compulsive pleasure of attempting to peel the cracked pieces down to a more-or-less even line.

What?

In closing, and in an attempt to keep this thread out of the Galley, I will quote a meme that got some traction on my Facebook wall this week:

There are two kinds of people in this world: morning people, and those who want to shoot them.

(Paraphrasing because for some reason, I can't get Facebook to come up right now to check the exact wording. Maybe Zuckerberg got a Title 41 takedown notice? ;) )

:LOLS:

Cucumbers are just green water. They even taste green. (Like celery does.)

Although it does remind me of a guinea fowl recipe...

Lay the guinea fowl on a plank in the roasting tray, fill with potatoes, tomatoes, onion, mushrooms and stock. Cook guinea fowl for 3 hours, then discard and eat the plank. :D
