This week's summary:

Cold Pies, crap Kangas, shit hot Cats. That's about it for the "fans"! Actually I'll add the Saints because my wife goes for them (in theory... she doesn't actually watch any games). So yeah, Saints scraped in!

In other news, GWS and Gold Coast notched up wins which makes it interesting, Freo and Hawks look strong. It's interesting that most Hawks fans I know are saying "Buddy who?" :)

Hawks and Freo don't look as though they'll be dropping off the pace any time soon, both very good in their respective wins.

Adelaide were very good against Geelong for three quarters, was surprised the Cats ran over the top of them in the end ..

Latest update: nothing much to speak of - Pies and Tigers tonight. I just don't know. I think the Pies could have it in them to prevail, but we shall see.

Geelong v West Coast will be a good one. North had a good win last week, and will be fancying their chances against Sydney considering the Swans' recent form.

Melbourne's first win in 16 games/Paul Roos' first victory as Melbourne coach.

surprising, Carlton are in disarray; the Mick Malthouse acquisition has been a bit of a fizzer ..

Nice for Geelong to break Collingwood's mini-streak against them (first time Geelong has prevailed since 2011 GF) last week Stevie G ;)

Yeah yeah  I don't feel so bad now after Geelong's demolition of West Coast! If I were to make predictions, I'd say the cats and the hawks are looking like the 2 real premiership contenders.

It makes you wonder whether Malthouse was sent to Carlton specifically to mess them up  I haven't seen such a bad team in a while. And Sydney have had a shocker of a start but I wouldn't write them off just yet.

Week 5 Summary:

Pies in the eight with a win over the Kangaroos! I thought they played very well for the first half - enough to encourage me! Cats have a big win over the Hawks - great game. They have Port next week, so could go further ahead at the top of the ladder after that game. Saints have pulled off a surprise win against the Bombers (so my wife's happy!). Carlton finally get a win on the board.

Pies a certainty for the 8 by seasons end imo; could still give the top 4 a shake, they've got too many good players - and a seemingly endless raft of youngsters coming through - not to.
Must admit I've only seen a couple of their games this season though StevieG - have Ben Reid and Paul Seedsman been playing? I think they were out both times I've watched the Pies - two very important players at any rate.

Very happy with the Cats win over Hawthorn, I really do hate the Hawks (my entire family barrack for them, too) and as usual it was an intense game.

St. Kilda have been really admirable imo, they'll do well and despite grim pre-season predictions they should finish somewhere around 9-12th
- which is kinda no-man's land -
but I think in recent times the benefits of tanking (high draft picks) has been overstated; teams that have been content to 'bottom out' or 'tank' for draft picks never seem to get it together; e.g. Melbourne, Carlton and to a lesser extent Richmond.
That kinda willful mediocrity ultimately leads to more of the same.
So St. Kilda are taking the high road imo; they may end up winning 'too many' games to qualify for the juicy draft picks, but what they will have gained - pride in their performance - will hold them in good stead for future years.

Good to see Essendon drop a game, not a fan of the Bombers.

Brisbane have been pretty woeful so far, Freo may not be quite as good as the experts were predicting, and the Kangaroos will continue to confound with Jekyl-and-Hyde performances ..

looking forward to Geelong's challenge this week against Port, who are an exciting young team with a heap of blossoming talent.

Neither of them (Reid and Seedsman) have had a game yet. Seedsman has had hip surgery but they're saying he could be back in the reserve in the next couple of weeks, and Reid has had an injury (calf I think) and should also be available in the next couple of weeks. Nathan Brown also hasn't played since round 2, so hopefully that's a good sign for the depth of the club.

So, to last week:

Shock loss for Geelong! Although from what I saw of the game, Port look like a good team. The cats didn't seem to be quite on their usual game though - lots of missed chances from what I saw.

Pies made hard work of it on Anzac day after Essendon got away to a flying start. Great game by Swan and Sidebottom. Swan has got to be one of the physically strongest players in the AFL - or is that just my interpretation, being a fan!

Saints completely gave their game away - a loss to Brisbane would huirt! Carlton came back from the dead to post a win. And the Kangaroos are still looking very impressive - it might be time for an unexpected loss for them, to keep their hot/cold reputation intact :D

Next week we have the big Carlton/Collingwood clash - it doesn't matter where each team is on the ladder - it's always a big game. West Coast v Freo will be a test for whether the Dockers can recover from a bad few weeks. Geelong should account for Richmond, North Melb v Gold Coast could be interesting.

aye, Port fans must be very excited about their team and they are looking like genuine flag threats, great running side with a lot of skill.
made my Cats look 2nd-rate, not much fun to watch ..

Collingwood are really well-positioned, with the aforementioned Reid and Seedsman to come back into that side.

Kangaroos might have turned a corner I think ..

Nope, looks like the Kangas are still as erratic as usual!

This week:

Collingwood looked impressive for 3 quarters. I was ready to send a piss-take message to a Carlton fan friend until the Blues kicked 8 goals to 4 in the final term to spoil my party! Hawks absolutely smashed St Kilda in the wet. Melbourne scrape home in an impressive win over Adelaide in Adelaide. Gold Coast continue to impress. Cats hang on the beat a valiant Richmond, and Freo win the battle of the West.

It is really hard to predict who's going to win from week to week at the moment.

Looks like next week is one of those split rounds. There should be some good games - Sydney v Hawks in Sydney should be a cracker as the Swans seem to be hitting their straps now. Port v Freo in Adelaide should be interesting too.

Things are certainly interesting this year! Gold Coast in the top 3, Carlton on the rise with a tough win over Adelaide, Pies just scraped through against West Coast, Port beating Hawthorn!! Freo beating the Cats!

Anyone in the top 12 at this stage could potentially make the final 8.

Just heard on the news that Ablett is out for the season, requiring shoulder surgery. That's dampen GC's chances.

Well, another season has started, and some interesting results in the first round.

Apparently it's the first time Melbourne have won a first round match for ten years! Sydney come from 40 points down to beat Essendon, Carlton look particularly crap, Collingwood hang on to beat Brisbane, Bulldogs win a close one, Nick Riewoldt has a tough day - he can't farewell his sister with a Saints win, and gets hammered from behind in the process, North Melbourne have a shocker (or were Adelaide just awesome?), Freo win in a thriller, and Hawthorn look ominous - made the Cats look lame.

There you go, first round summary complete. :D

That was definitely one of the best grand finals I've witnessed in recent years. Congrats to the dogs, who deserved their first win in 62 years!

Some incredible performances.
