Well, I did actually come here looking for a recommendation.I'm Murrin wrote:I have finished Jeff VanderMeer's Authority. Read this book. Go on. Drop everything, buy Annihilation, buy Authority, preorder Acceptance, and start reading. Now.
I can't do this series justice by describing it - you have to just trust me on this. It's worth it.

Am now half way through Against All Things Ending. One thing I will say about SRD, is that he has guts for writing such a difficult and complicated and just plain different story to the first two Chronicles. I should get the series done before Elohimfest ... I figure I have the long plane flight to Abq as a last resort if I'm short on reading time.

Just finished Book 5 Game of thrones.... Holy crap.... they love to get you invested in main characters and then kill them off......
When did they say book 6 was coming out????
Prince of Nothing is next....but I also ordered a set of short stories by SRD "Reave the Just and Other Tales" .. I may knock those out first.

Finished All the Weyrs of Pern. It's a strange one, being set in the more fantasy setting of the 9th Pass, with all of the characters we know, yet being more sf focused than fantasy oriented. I find the story a bit tedious at times, but the ending gets to me every time...
Onward to The Dolphins of Pern.

I really do like the Holder and Craft focus of Dolphins. But I feel these last of Anne's Pern novels which were written on her own, read in the order she suggests, are more of an sf feel than fantasy. I prefer the fantasy aspect, as I have stated before. But I can see why they would appeal to you, Av.
I do have several of the Tower and Hive series, which I will start when I finish my Pern reread. That is a series I have never read before. I approach it knowing it is going to be more sf oriented, similar to how I approached the Crystal Singer series. I understand Tower and Hive is your favorite McCaffrey, Av. I'm looking forward to it.
Anyway, finished Dolphins last night. Onward to The Skies of Pern.

That's good to hear, as my only complaint with the first was that it was waaay too short. I was trying to make it last, but that didn't work - started it last night and finished this morning.I'm Murrin wrote:VanderMeer? I read it in one sitting. The second one's a bit longer and meatier, though - read over a few days. Really great books, in different ways.

Am finished with The Skies of Pern, and followed with the short story Ever the Twain. I'm saddened that Skies is currently the last novel dealing with the 9th Pass; the Abominators storyline has been left hanging, and while I guess if the story hadn't been written fans would have wondered what the evolution of the Weyrs would be after the Pass, I think I'm with dlb that the series could have ended just fine after All the Weyrs.
I need to pick up the compilation Legends II for the short story Beyond Between, which I believe is the last Pern story Anne wrote on her own. Then I'll begin my reread of the Todd influenced and/or written stories. I hope I will like them better upon reread...
