Julian of Norwich

Post by ussusimiel »

Julian of Norwich is an English mystic from the 14th Century. When she was thirty years old she had a series of visions which she recorded. She was the first woman to have a book (Revelations of Divine Love) published in English, and is probably best known for the phrase, 'all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well' (which T.S. Eliot used in the 'Little Gidding' section of The Four Quartets).

A friend of mine is working on a 'translation' of selections of the writings. He is attempting to create a new text that keeps the feel of the original while also adding a new layer, the way a medieval scribe copying a text added their own touch to it through different spellings, errors etc. He has said that it's okay for me to put some sections of it up here. If anyone has any questions I can pass them onto him (and maybe even get him in here to make a few comments on the text and the process ).

Here's the first part of the first section:

Cool. 8) Is this the original or his retouched version? And if it's the new version, what has he added? I'm not at all familiar with the original work, obviously.

I suppose before I answer any of those questions on behalf of the author I'd like to hear what people think of the text as it is presented. As a way of encouraging engagement with the text I'm going to start a thread that uses one of the posted pieces as material for a writing exercise.

Now, now! It's all voluntary, and if you choose not to do it I'll just follow you around the Watch making bad puns and talking about cows! :P

So, business as usual, then?

I suck at poetry, but I'll see what I can do...

The author of the Julian 'translations' that I am posting here has given me this link to a blogpost that he recently made about the work: u.
