Glad you're feeling better, Av.

This has been a long week, and it's only Wednesday.

Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing
Is there no world for tomorrow, if we wait for today?

Being ill is a bummer when you're not used to it! Not long to the weekend now Av. Hope you're feeling better now.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Av.

I'm better today since visited the dentist and had a root canal yesterday. My teeth had been bothering me for a week.

While very minor compared to most people's ailments, I'm glad to be getting some feeling back in my left index finger. I have had a trapped nerve in my neck which has been giving me some aches in my arm and numbness in my finger.

What bothers me more than anything is that it makes it hard to play musical instruments. I'm basically down to two I can play as they only really need my right hand - trumpet and harmonica.

Getting an MRI tomorrow which should help identify where the problem is and hopefully get things back to normal (or as near normal as I was before...)

Good luck with the MRI, michaelm.

Finally talked with a lawyer today. Gonna send a letter to my brother, giving him a deadline on the house. It feels like progress, but it's a little scary, too...

Directly downwind from a 5-alarm fire in my neighborhood. It sounds like they're finally getting it under control; no fatalities.

Not fun to come home to, there was zero visibility for a two-block radius, and I thought my whole block was gone. So close it set off my smoke alarm. I was just out of the evacuation zone, but the smoke is really bad. I shouldn't stay here, but nowhere else to go.

Lots of people got some stresses and ailments in their lives right now, it seems :( Hail the Watch! Hang in there folks.

For my part I'm feeling pissy and a bit demoralised. Having the worst crohn's flare up since my operation last year, and it's been persisting for over a week now. Nothing that's going to send me to hospital just yet, and the doc says occasionally you'll get a bad one. Damned painful, annoying, and gross though. Not what I need to cope with along with polytech assignments.

Maybe the stress of school is aggravating the Crohn's.

I know I do. Six years since my last paid holiday, and I can't even remember the last time I even took a sick day - stopped accruing sick time over two years ago due to hitting the cap.

I only just had a break a few weeks ago, and I'm already feeling like I really want to have another trip somewhere.

(The British Fantasy Convention is in York this weekend, and ever since I heard that I've kinda wanted to go there. Not to the convention - to York. I miss the town, but I kinda feel like if I did go down for a visit I'd not actually do anything there.)

Nothing wrong with traveling some where just for the change of scenery and immersion in local atmosphere.

What Menolly said, Murrin. :) I could use a vacation, too, but I've picked up another partner to work for and won't be done with that assignment for another month.

Here we're legally entitled to 30 days paid sick leave every 3 years, and companies must give a minimum of 20 days paid annual leave a year.

Yeah, the US is notoriously bad when it comes to those kind of labour laws - pay, working hours, annual leave, sick leave, maternity/paternity.

I get 22 days holiday to take as I like, 3 days fixed at Christmas, and 8 national holidays per year. If you don't use all your holidays up in a year they make you take the extra time off at the end of the Christmas break.

I earn 3 weeks of vacation pay per year since I passed the 5-year mark, and I don't remember how quickly sick pay accrues due to the fact that I hit the max years ago. Next year they're rolling sick/vacation/personal into one PTO category, though that won't help me.

They just won't let me use any of it. When it's a hypothetical situation they'll say anything to make me happy - "Sure you can take a vacation. We'll borrow someone from another store to cover you if necessary." But when it becomes reality - "I requested these days off on the calendar, can you let me know if they will be approved so I can make plans?" They hem and haw and get all evasive.

I'm good at what I do. It's not what I thought I would be doing at this stage of my life, but as far as this company goes, I don't want to change departments. It keeps me busy, it keeps me fit, and I like the hours. The problem is, while I am qualified to cover any other department, there is no one that can cover me. Which is absolutely absurd and no way to run any kind of business. I feel used and taken for granted, and it's just further incentive to look for another job, and then what will they do? They've taught me to believe that I am expendable (true) and that there is a line of people waiting to take my job (not true). The last two people they hired quit after the first day.

Are you unionized?

Whether or not you are this is what I would do and as a manager, what was done to me.

In an email to your immediate supervisor cc'ing your personnel office, union if you have one, write an email, return receipt.

In the memo state the exact total of hours you have accumulated. Be specific, stating how much sick, how much annual and how much personal leave you have.

Then state that the company regulations require you to use this time and you are requesting assistance in developing a plan to use the time in a way that is convenient to you and does not put an undue burden on the company. Ask for the response in writing.

End by saying you are making every effort to comply with current labor standards.

Be polite and professional.

Bet you get a quick response. It used to send our administrators scrambling.
