Give me Spirals!

Post by peter »

What is it about spirals that is so satisfying to the human eye. Sure I've heard the thing about the golden ratio, how the spiral represents a constantly repeated motif throughout nature, how it represents an economy of form, strength and structure that has no equal - but damn, none of that even comes close. When I look at a spiral I just feel good about it. It is infinite - you just know it is going to keep on doing it's 'spiral thing' untill the end of time. There are loads of different kinds [Euler, Archimidean, Hyperbolic ....etc, etc] all doing there own different thing. Can we start a collection of spirals - go on, pitch one in and make an old[ish] man happy! Try to present the best spiral picture in town!

spirals at WolframAlpha. Mostly equations but some graphs. You can also copy/paste and equation, drop it in the search bar, and it will graph the result for you.

Heighway Dragon is utterly cool when you read how it's made. It has so many neat properties, and it's a fractal, too.

And the "ghetto version" from Tara, but hardly less significant:

Also what is "old-ish" these days? I call myself young and reaching mid-thirties. And I keep telling to someone else here no to call themselves old either... :P

Nice ones guys. WF's first was the most striking though. My eyes nearly fell out. :D

Wow! Result or what! WF's has my eyes dancing with spots. There's galaxies and edible spirals and spirals that are shaman shaped on lintels of stone {I have one of these near where I live}. There's maths and mandelbrots and Ali's potential tat.

Are helices and spirals related? Helices are cool too - I feel an intimate connection at an almost 'cellular' level with them. ;)

Gratitude guys - if you come across any more on your cyber-travels would you add them to the collection!

Yes. A helix has to happen
in 3d [at least]. And there are a lot more helices.
Because any and all 2d spirals can be extended into a 3d helix
...but not all helices can be compacted into a 2d spiral.
[For instance a normal spring is a helix...
but if you compact it into 2d from the "top down"
[perpendicular] you end up with a circle. If you compact
it at an angle, you end up with a wave shape.
[[I'm pretty sure that is correct, even though I'm
probably not using "compacted" in a technically
correct way]]

the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.
