That laugh is one of the funniest moments in movie history, imo.Cail wrote:The only part of The Money Pit that I remember is Tom Hanks's maniacal laughter when the tub falls through the floor. I love that scene.aTOMiC wrote:I actually like Joe vs The Volcano and The Money Pit.

Certainly better when you see all the crap that came before, but still.
The Money Pit has many other good moments, and a couple great ones.
-The guy in the band telling Hanks that the band wants to change their name.
-The conductor's speech to the orchestra after he hears them play for the first time since returning from Europe.

And yet, it's such a great bad movie, that it almost feels like a good movie given certain criteria (being objectively entertaining as an unrepentant repository of teenaged hero fantasies). Is every great bad movie a campy send up, or is there some sort of unintended Ed Wood style aesthetic myopia required on the part of its creator? And can you even put Heavy Metal in that category, as it is packed with all of the unabashed naiveté and raw hormonal ambitions of a teenaged boy, making it in some sense trenchant? I'm reminded of a Lester Bangs quote from Almost Famous:Vraith wrote:Heh...this isn't the "one viewpoint" thread, whatever you want counts.Doc Hexnihilo wrote:Does Heavy Metal count?

"The Doors? Jim Morrison? He's a drunken buffoon posing as a poet... Give me The Guess Who. They got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic."

The catholic church is the largest pro-pedophillia group in the world, and every member of it is guilty of supporting the rape of children, the ensuing protection of the rapists, and the continuing suffering of the victims.
Heavy Metal is bad. But it's got so much iconic stuff to it, and such a great soundtrack, that it transcends it's badness to become bad. As in badass.
But not in the same way as classics such as Buckaroo Banzai, Big Trouble in Little China, or Pootie Tang. Those movies are litmus tests.....You either love them, or we'll never be close friends. You know, I think I'd put Ice Pirates in that group too.

I'd completely forgotten Ice Pirates. Love that movie. I mean, it's terrible, but so much fun.Cail wrote:Heavy Metal is bad. But it's got so much iconic stuff to it, and such a great soundtrack, that it transcends it's badness to become bad. As in badass.

Also, I'd like to add The Rocky Horror Picture Show to the list.

I think my family comprises some of the few people on earth who love Kung Pow. I'm serious: we love this movie. Own it. Watched it probably 20 times. Quote it when appropriate. It's like our own secret language.
It's dumb as shit. And a truly horrible movie. I can't explain it.

Hee hee...according to some recent posts, me, Cail, Z, "The Nihilo-chameleon," and perhaps Fisty are well on our way to BFF's.
Maybe this will change things:
I chuckle and snort my way through "Repo Man" regularly.
I'm chuckling right now, just posting about it.

Never saw that one, either. Looks like I have some catching up to do. Gonna watch Pootie Tang today. I looked it up, and Louis CK is the driving force?? Oh yeah.Vraith wrote:Maybe this will change things:

Actually, Joe Vs. The Volcano I don't think of as an actual "bad" film. I considered putting this on the list until I realized that. It's actually a very good film disguised as a bad film and it takes more than one viewing to actually realize this. But if you compare, say, Heavy Metal to Joe Vs. The Volcano and really explore both, you'd really see which is actually bad and which have a lot of interesting things going on under the surface that isn't readily apparent.
The Money Pit I'd also put down as bad, but so much fun. And for me personally, it was the first movie I ever made out during. I barely remembered any of the film after the first viewing.
And I'd like to add the Beastmaster films, as well as The Sword and the Sorcerer. Truly horrid films, but so much fun.

Life is a waste of time
Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life
