The party idea sounds fun to me, too...peter (USSM) wrote:Is there reason to fear for the Watches future. It always seems pretty active in the places I post or visit. Granted we've lost a few regulars over the years [who was the guy who lived in Russia - he was cool] but hey, it happens. Shall we not send out an e-mail to all existing members inviting them to a party on a given day - like a reunion do or whatever! That would be fun.
I'm going to admit... I've fantasized about some sort of challenge where a group of people make riddles and puzzles that have their solutions (mainly) in stuff from the books and from things Watchers have said in the past... and they [these hypothetical people making the puzzles?] somehow make stuff that's so engaging and/or has enough variety that people "can't look away" and really get in to solving it.

Which is Av's usual weekend behavior. A life, he has one.Avatar wrote:Wasn't online all weekend.
Heh and oh my. You do know this has happened four times; the four Elohimfests that have been held in Albuquerque. Indeed, the “Whither the Watch?” thread and the entire Watch revitalization movement was born out of conversations that took place in danlo’s back yard last June.peter (USSM) wrote:Is there reason to fear for the Watches future....Shall we not send out an e-mail to all existing members inviting them to a party on a given day - like a reunion do or whatever! When/if it happens again, make a point to go...or take part in one of the many smaller gatherings that take place each year. Any gathering of three or more Watchers is a 'fest!

Oh, see I was assuming he just meant on the Watch... just like, "Hey, we're inviting a bunch of oldbies back all at once, so you should see more people you know online that day!"Savor Dam wrote:Heh and oh my. Anyone else notice a bit of a pick up in activity on the Watch in the last couple of weeks: new game in Gravin Threndor, a couple of old faces around, more people logging etc?
Just sayin' it's nice to see!

I keep wanting to contrast Facebook social interaction, with its problems and weirdnesses, and the interactions in a place like this.ussusimiel wrote:Agreed, and a big cause of this drop off (as we have also noticed here) has been the rise of Facebook.
(I am often thinking about how on FB the extent to which the people in a given conversation know each other varies WILDLY. And if you interact with a friend-of-friend from a different social circle, the odds of repeated interaction seem... low.)
Because it seems that would be related to our motivations to want to keep this place around.

To me, Facebook seems like a run-and-gun type of interaction. You post some silliness and you get almost instant feedback. Posts at the Watch allow you more time to reflect (and second-guess yourself
). So you get longer, more thoughtful posts here a lot of times than you do on FB.
And thanks to FB's algorithms, you aren't going to see everything you're interested in seeing, and your friends are almost definitely posting stuff that FB isn't showing you. Here, if you've been gone for a while and have missed stuff, you can scroll back and read it all.
OTOH, FB's algorithms give you an out: "I didn't know you had done X." "Well, I posted about it on FB -- didn't you see it?" "No! Stupid FB algorithms..."

I'm not a Facebook fan; it seems to generate almost as much animosity as it does positive relations, and it's capacity to damage an individual beyond any reasonable relationship to 'their just desserts' is truly frightening. The same is true of Twitter.
