They carry leprosy, and there is a spike of cases in Florida.

every article I have read says you can get it, but it is rare. if you handle and eat a lot of them, increases them.

I have stood a foot or two from an armadillo, seems they have terrible eyesight. he could not tell I was there.

It's been known for a long time that armadillos carry leprosy. But it's not that easy to catch it, like sarge says. The article even mentions that the CDC says it's unlikely to catch it from armadillos.

Wonder why there's a spike?

Guy in the States fired his gun at an armadillo in his back garden this week and the bullet bounced off and hit him in the face; he's ok but sustained a broken jaw for his troubles.

Heh! That's actually true!
At least one of the bullets ricocheted off the animal’s bony, protective shell and then struck the man in his jaw, according to Reuters.
But there's more:
This is the second time this year that an armadillo shooting has gone awry.

In April, a Georgia man accidentally shot his mother-in-law when he fired a pistol at an armadillo, according to ABC affiliate WALB News. The bullet killed the animal, but it “also ricocheted off of it, hit a fence, went through the back door of his mother-in-law’s mobile home, through a recliner she was sitting in, and into her back,” according to WALB News.

“Just the circumstances, just all the way around, the whole situation was unusual,” said Investigator Bill Smith with the Lee county Sheriff’s Office told WALB News.
... which means armadillos can't be all bad, right? :wink:
