What are you reading in general?

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond

One of those books that always looked interesting, but I'd never gotten around to reading. It is quite interesting.

Kaehlin, my one time WoW playing friend has been trying to get me to read that book.

I've been fallow for a couple of months. I started, but never finished Dead Wake: The last crossing of the Lusitania by Dan Larson. A bit of family history involved, as I was telling Sky on Messenger last night. My grandfather's step-mother was a survivor on that last crossing.

I also tried to restart reading Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie, but didn't get too far.

But your topic choices .. are a tad gritty .. Do you read anything other than religiosities Well you must .. I assume you read sci fi fantasy .. TCTC .. GOTs Have you read all of Donaldson MN the Gap series

But if, from your 2nd paragraph on, you were referring to me, then I didn't think anyone was a more prolific reader than Av. I've seen the number of books he reads a year -- a staggering number which leaves my comprehension skills in the dust.

And yeah, as you've noted (re: Cyclonopedia), I read other stuff. But I've been on a philosophy/theology tear for a while now.

No, I've not read all of Donaldson. TC1st/2nd/Last. Gap. Some short stories. Have MN, but haven't read as of yet.

LOL, I recall what that gif is from, Wosbald. It's that Twilight Zone character that wanted to be the only person on Earth, so that no one could distract him from reading. I recall that in the next moment, he accidentally steps on his glasses, and there's no one around to fix them.

(As for Mordant's Need, well, you've got to do things in your own time and your own way, of course, and I highly respect that. That said, I hold Mordant's Need in high regard.)

I don't think so, other than I might be more inclined to identify strands of philosophico-theological thematics suffusing the text. But this gives no singularly privileged insight, at least not any more than those with an aptitude for sociology might have into Dune or for gastronomy into Fried Green Tomatoes.

I get that. I'm trending towards thinking he's the most over-rated living author.

Wos...yea, other reading doesn't give one a PRIVILEGED take/insight...but surely a different one? For instance, I can't fully enjoy Stephenson's "Anathem" because he has some pretty bad, and not very original, "philosophical" takes that underpin the story. If they were better integrated, more fully driven by the tale and less by him, it would be much better.

Let me explain my husband was religious to a degree. Was a lay bishop .. wed read sci fi fantasy and when we read the Gap he would switch out expletives with other less offensive words. It was kinda irritating tbh lol

No I did not corrupt him .. he moved away from his beliefs himself.

But your original question would seem to imply that -- for example, SRD's works -- are essentially impious. An implication which I think, as a working-theory, is bullshit.

There exist people/groups...even Christian-evolved ones...that would say the ability of humans to create is a literal gift from God, and therefore ALL creations are a kind of worship of/to/for that God. [[taken to full implication, such an idea leads to some very strange and im- or anti-pious seeming places I would say...but whatever buffs ones boots...]].

In general, piousity's boundaries have innate and extravagant porousity. They leak no matter how strictly/strongly constructed.
