Thanks Menolly!
Hey wait just a second...Menolly is the name of a character in Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern series. I take it you enjoy the work of Anne McCaffrey? So do I.
Thanks AjK!
To answer your question (I was kinda wondering if someone would ask) :
In WGW, after the escape from the Soulbiter and LA was nearly frozen to death, TC and Mistweave put Linden in a granite cookpot and filled it with water. Thomas was so avid to do something to help her that he used his white gold ring to squeeze wild magic into the cookpot to heat the water. It showed TC he did have the necessary amount of control to keep the wild magic from destroying the fragile granite and Linden Avery as well. It was an awesome achievement considering the growing amount of pressure the venom was putting on him.
I'd like to submit for your consideration that we all need to learn to exert the same amount of control when demonstrating power. Some of us love to wield power and others of us are more afraid of power than powerlessness.
IMO, true power works best when we wield it in service to others (who are powerless to help themselves) without any expectations of getting something in return for ourself. We all have the power to control our own behavior. But it must be learned (and earned) through experience. This is a large part of what LOVE is all about.
But rarely does Lord Foul (or any of his servants) use power in this manner. It is the nature of evil to use power to control others. This is why Linden Avery loathed possession and why LF manipulated events so that, time and time again, LA would be forced (force is much different than power) to use her health-sense to possess others. LF and his servants may seem powerful, but in terms of those things which really matter, they are powerless, which is precisely why they fear TC and LA.
Within the context of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, SRD displays his skill as a wordsmith because his fictitious characters learn so much about themselves and their relationship to wielding power, they grow by the experience.
Perhaps, by their example (and SRD's skill) we can also learn something about ourselves by reading this highly original work of fantasy.
Thanks aliantha!
Multiple avatar disorder...
Good one! I'll remember to watch & ward for MAD posters.

Randy,
Thanks for the explanation and for the interesting comments. And I agree about TC's control. I am on TOT in my current re-read and I don't know if I ever give him enough credit for that.
"MAD"? That one will likely stick.
I don't have Menolly's legitimate excuse for multiple avatars but least my changing avatars have a running theme. (All are silly photos of me. What doesn't run consistently through them is cuteness, which drops off exponentially with age.

Ali, I am not sure what scares me the most: that vest, me in that vest, or the fact that at the time I didn't think anything was wrong with that vest.aliantha wrote:AjK, that is perhaps your scariest avatar yet....

Be doubly welcome then.
And come discuss Anne's works down in General Fantasy/Sci-Fi Discussion. That thread can use a kick start.

Hmm, I guess what I was really after would be more like "multiple username disorder". But MAD is a better acronym for the malady than MUD. What to do, what to do....AjK wrote:"MAD"? I try to keep Tänya (and Niggle) tucked safely away in Gravin Threndor. The welcome in that name, while sincerely meant, was in error. It's O-gon-cho that tends to break out every now and then...
