Yeah, but when does he ever have a role that's not "wise mentor type leader guy in a sci-fi flick"? Even when he's not Picard, he's still Picard. (Or voice acting, which he does a good bit of.)

The difference between actors who were trained for and on the stage, and those who have only ever really appeared on film. Alec Guinness and Kenneth Branagh spring to mind as well.
