I understand the confusion, Frostie.
Since the Watch is administered and moderated by volunteers, each mod is given pretty much free hand in what they deem appropriate for a PG-rated forum. I tend to be more strict than most; but besides feeling it is not appropriate language for minors to come across, it is language I tend not to use anywhere and am more comfortable not having it as the norm. It is called "foul" language for a reason, and should be relegated to that status.
I admit I missed the use of what I deem an inappropriate word a few days ago; I have been skimming posts a lot lately, and it did not register with me when I read it. I'll rectify that by PM'ing the poster as I did with SdS, and asking if he is also willing to edit his post or if he would like me to do so for him.
I can not vouch for the use of such words in Mallory's, since I no longer frequent it. But I do know the sheriff disagrees with my stance regarding such language, and it would not surprise me if it is used frequently in the 'tank. However, the 'tank is now a user group forum; while still on the Watch, I guess that makes it a little different. I dunno; those posts can still be freely read, regardless of if one is a member of the group or not. But on the Watch, the mod chooses what can be allowed for the forum they moderate. You hopefully will find very little use of such language here in The Summonsing since I started moderating it. And the same for The Galley and the JKRowling sub-forums.
...or so I understand it.

I Never Fail To Be Astounded By The Things We Do For Promises - Ronnie James Dio (All The Fools Sailed Away)
Remember, everytime you drag someone through the mud, you're down in the mud with them
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...
It's about learning to dance in the rain
Where are we going...and... WHY are we in a handbasket?

Since we're talking about it...
I don't think there's anything wrong with using that particular word in the forum.
Let's see...there are currently no minors on the forum that we're aware of, and haven't been for a long time...
...almost all of us arrive here to talk about a series in which the main character is a leper who rapes somebody means we should be comfortable with "mature themes..."
...it is necessary to be over 13 to sign up.
Now I know that Menolly flinches if she even thinks about a swearword, (ah Menolly, how you will suffer if we were ever to speak in person, I cannot overstate how constantly and unthinkingly I curse), but personally I think it's a bit overboard.
Traditionally, it is for the moderator to decide on general rules for their own forum. So this is a personal opinion, and not an official one as it were. I think we could survive a little slack. I promise nobody will be corrupted.

PG — Parental Guidance Suggested. Some Material May Not Be Suitable For Children.
A PG-rated motion picture should be investigated by parents before they let their younger children attend. The PG rating indicates, in the view of the Rating Board, that parents may consider some material unsuitable for their children, and parents should make that decision. The more mature themes in some PG-rated motion pictures may call for parental guidance. There may be some profanity and some depictions of violence or brief nudity. But these elements are not deemed so intense as to require that parents be strongly cautioned beyond the suggestion of parental guidance. There is no drug use content in a PG-rated motion picture.
So, there may be some profanity with a PG rating. And I'm not sure that, given the age requirement, we don't qualify for PG-13 anyway, although we very rarely reach even that level.PG-13 — Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Children Under 13.
A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them. A PG-13 motion picture may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category. The theme of the motion picture by itself will not result in a rating greater than PG-13, although depictions of activities related to a mature theme may result in a restricted rating for the motion picture. Any drug use will initially require at least a PG-13 rating. More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence. A motion picture’s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG-13 if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the motion picture is inconspicuous.

Avast, there matey! While I may be resembling that remark, using such terms when referring to the gracious wench who is my co-mod will get you called scallywag, rapscallion, and picaroon.
I'll be admitting that the lass is sometimes a trifle over-eager to be encouraging prim and decorous language. Since this is the welcoming portal for the Watch, she want to put a pretty face on it...nothing like the wretched hive of scum and villainy that ye Tankers frequent. I've spoken to her about it, but she has a will of her own...and far be it from me to quash that spark. She is ever who she is!

You should consider yourself lucky that I am enjoying my drink too much to spill it--I have gutted people for calling me less than that.Savor Dam wrote:Avast, there matey! Arrgg! T'were not directed at your jib, Director. Wayfriend be the one that broadside was aimed at.
Good that your grog remained unspilt, though!
Now, back to the greeting of the new fishies...

And let me the first to welcome you here as well, Cozarkian!
There'll be a few officials along soon with their welcome and forum pimping. I see that you have already found your way into the 'Tank. Great stuff! I'll definitely bump into you there as it's one of the most active of the forums with plenty of heated and erudite debate.
You may not know about the hidden forum for discussing The Last Dark but if you're on for speculation and previews that's the place to be. Click here and follow the instructions in the post to get joined up.
Otherwise keep doing what you're doing, joining in, starting new threads, bumping old ones. This is a great place, very friendly and with great people. We love it when a new person gets stuck in, so don't be shy, we're not
