Firefox always bugged me that, for it to be usable (and not ugly!), you had to install a bunch of 3rd party plugins (and a good theme). It's been getting better about this lately, but still...

Since I've switched to Chrome, I found that I don't need all the plugins I used to have. Although, a few of them would still be useful...

Nauseated. I just saw someone on Facebook called Raychul. Yes, Raychul. Alternative spellings of names can be interesting, but this one's just an ugly word. It makes her parents look illiterate.

I like words. Bad words offend me.

I'm right with you there - alternative spellings can be interesting, but some of the names that appear on the primary school list are just plain stupid. (And I won't name any of them just in case someone here is named as such, or a variation thereof.... ;) ) But Raychul? Seriously! That's ... yeah, nauseating!

Some friends convinced me to go to a rock festival with them today (Pedal to the Metal, if anyone's interested).

I had a lot of fun for the first few hours, even in the mosh pit. I'm told I didn't do too bad for my first time :)

Then, out of nowhere... bam. Thinking about the Mrs and our separation. Had to get out of there, and get home fast. Almost started bawling on the light rail.

Biking the last few miles really helped me calm down. Now, I just get to enjoy my bruises (which it WAS quite fun to get).

Oh, by the way, I was finally able to get my wedding ring off today. All that weight I put on the last few years is really starting to melt away...

This made me very sad when I read it. Sending good thoughts your way Rigel. Although I never like hearing about marriages breaking up, sometimes it's better that they do. Here's hoping your heart mends and your pain fades. Huggles to you! |G

Thanks, Furls. The best decision I've made so far is buying a bicycle... even going for a couple of miles really helps clear my head.

Yeah, I've done pretty good not eating fast food lately... but when I gave in and tried Wendy's, I almost puked :/

Here's to taking care of ourselves

Still awhile off (2011), but I may be getting an assistantship and my MA in Cyprus...some little small island off the Mediterranean, due to a professor from my undergrad years working at Eastern Mediterranean University. Yeah, hit me like a load of bricks too...we'll see how it pans off, and I wonder how I, an Englisher, will survive in a land full of Greek and Turkish language...

In any case, it'd be an interesting turn in my life and he'll be making his argument for me when he returns to his office. We'll see! Definitely some nice Byzantine, Turkish Greco-Roman architecture there, never mind the amazing weather and pure blue water. To think, the stuff I might write there!

In other news, I've decided to write the remaining 80,000 words of my 2nd novel in shorthand, on a notebook, while either in bed, in an easychair or outside.

I'm still unemployed and I'm hanging out at my usual cafe, the one Lucimay and I do our laundry at. She was here earlier but finished before I did. I had the bad misfortune of getting a bum washer and had to start the load over when I put the other one in the dryer. I'm sure the late load is now finished but there are about fifty cop cars outside, including several varieties of vehicles and cops with machine guns and battering rams in full riot gear trying to break into the building next door. They asked us to vacate the sidewalk so now I am alternately using the internet and watching the excitement through the window. I have no idea what is going on. They also blocked off the road. Lets just hope I don't get caught in the crossfire if or when it begins.... 8O

Just when you thought it was safe to do laundry...

Hope you're okay, CMJ.

Good luck on snagging that Mediterranean idyll, LF! ;)

Hopefully you've made it home safely by now, Jenn...8O

It's *always* freezing here at work lately. It's usually okay in the mornings, but it gets gradually colder in the afternoons -- to the point that I have to put on a sweater inside and take it off to go out. Didn't used to affect me so much, but these past few months have been bad. (Older? Thinner? Carrels on this floor are colder than the ones on my old floor? Who knows why?) Anyhow, I brought in some soup today to heat up for lunch, thinking maybe a hot lunch would help me stay warm through the afternoon. It's not working. Bah.

So I called in stupid to work yesterday. Started a batch of yogurt around 7pm Sunday night. Usually takes about 5 hours; midnight's not my optimal bedtime but it's doable. I normally use a bit of the previous batch of yogurt as starter for the new batch, but this time I thought maybe I should use up some of the powdered starter that came with the yogurt maker. So I do the usual stuff and put the vat in the yogurt maker and pull it out to check it around 12:15am. The container goes slosh. So I belatedly check the directions on the box of starter, and it says that instead of cooling the milk to 112 degrees F before adding the starter, you should cool it to 77 degrees F. Well, that explains what happened -- I killed the starter. So I thought, well, at this point all I've got is warm milk -- I could just cool it down to 77 and put new starter in it and all should be well. Which worked, but it took until 2:30am to cool the milk to 77 degrees. At that point, I decided to call in sick....

But I did penance by spending all day yesterday cleaning the house.

How did the yogurt come out with double started powder in it, ali?

Can you taste the killed starter?

I didn't notice any difference in the taste. And it came out fine. Woot!

Wow! A toast to you, Sea! To have one's pictures in print (even if only one) is the dream of nearly every aspiring photographer - yes, even in this day when anyone can easily post a pic online.

Thanks MM. What I'm really chuffed about is (as far as I can tell) it's part of a children's reader series (for schools). And it's grade one level...which means SoS will love it!

I also, some months ago, had a photo of a starfish I took put in a Netherlands biodiversity report which was kinda cool. But there's nothing like having it in a real book! Once I get a copy of the book (and see what picture it is--I have a few different ones) I'll post the pic in the photos section. :)
