Console Emulators and Favorite ROMs!

Post by Creator »

Any of you use em?

What is your favorite?

What games do you play?

Genesis seemed MOST cranky about emulators - and ROMS

I've played Shining Force, Fantasy Star, Final Fantasy V - english patch, Bahamut Lagoon (detect a pattern here? ;) )

Shining force is ok...Phantasy Star has one really bad game in the main series IMO (can't remember which one) but also some really great ones. Bahamut Lagoon is kinda easy but definitely fun. FFV, I already have on PS1 in the anthology pack, so no reason to emulate it.

I've emulated much of the Fire Emblem series (actually, I own carts for 4 and 5 as well). Thankfully they have a pretty big following and most of the games either have english patches, or are in progress to get english patches. I'm playing 5 right now, it's the hardest turn based strat game I've ever played. Well, it's not that hard yet, but I'm only a few levels into the game and it's already well past the difficulty of any of the stages in FE4, 8, and I expect will soon be past everything but the sixth on hard mode.

It's a very interesting game - cash and stores are mostly nonexistant, so you have to capture enemies (which requires reduced strength attacks) and take their items (there's also a stat which determines whether characters can capture others or not). The main character is one of the worst in the Fire emblem series from my experience. There's many more units than in most of the other Fire Emblem games, and they're tougher, too. And the game has a habit of throwing unexpected things at you - for instance, you have to run from a character who's (probably) strong enough to take out your entire party in the chapter I just beat.

Also, if you liked BL you might want to look for another square rarity, Live a Live. The gameplay is pretty simple, but the story is ok for some of the chapters and the score has some pretty kickass tracks. Also, the premise is interesting - during the first part of the game you choose between various character chapters, each with their own special features, tweaks, etc. For instance, in the Bakumatsu chapter you play a ninja infiltrating a japanese castle, and can play through the chapter without killing anyone (there are a few battles you have to win, but they don't count). Meanwhile, in the sci-fi chapter you play a robot who has to wander around a ship and perform activities, with only one battle in the entire chapter (at the end). When you finish all the ones initially available a medieval/fantasy chapter opens up that sets the storyline for the final chapter; it's pretty interesting, but the final chapter is actually pretty boring and anticlimatic, even though it reunites the main characters from every chapter.

Oh, finally, you should check out Terranigma. It's got great gameplay and a pretty good story as well.

What's art of fighting? Of course I've played Samurai Showdown, but never heard of that.

Ghosts n' goblins (or however it's spelled) is fine but not necessarily one of my favorites.

Sweet, a new SNK game I've never heard of. I'll have to go find that sometime, thanks for the word on it.

I used to have SNES on my old computer, but I don't have it now. A friend gave it to me then on disk, not sure even how to find it now. Only a few games would play, like Super Mario World and F/Zero.

No worries. Can download it from ROM Hustler or whatever the site is. Will post a URL if you really need it. ;)

The SNES is just about perfectly emulated these days.

I use the ZSNES and play mostly RPG classics and rarities, such as Star Ocean, Bahamut Lagoon, Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Mario RPG, etc. I'll never need a console again!

Of course, I can't live without the Nintendo stuff, either: Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Mario All-Stars, etc.

I also have a PSone controller plugged into my CPU (via SmartJoy USB adapter). No way I'd play these babies on keyboard!

From snesorama.us:

Emulation for the Snes is close to perfect these days, and has been for quite some time. Both sound and video is running as smooth as the real thing, and you can even make it look better if you mess around with some settings on your emulator. In general a P2 or AMD K6 based system should be enough for good speed, aswell as Direct X of course...

Zsnes - www.zsnes.com/
The best emulator available for the Snes console. Offers the widest game compatability, aswell as the lowest hardware requirement. The configuration of this emulator is also much better than with other emus, such as the Snes9x. Another FINE feature is the mousesupport which will come handy in games where you use a crosshair to shoot enemies, and similar games. I absolutely adore playing Tinstar (available at this site) using this mouse feature :) The mouse doesn't require any special configuration, just hit the key mapped for the enabling of this option. Use the misc menu, for a list of available keys, and what they do.

Snes9x - www.snes9x.com/
The 2nd best emulator for the Snes. At my previous sites I used to brag about it's neat little feature, which allowed u to play games 3dfx optimized :) Although a cool feature, it's uneeded with today's computers, as 3dfx is dead :) If u happen to have 3dfx (A.K.A Voodo), u'll be happy for this future. The emulator is otherwise very good with a decent system. In other words, with a new system, this emu will pretty much be just as good as Zsnes. I do however think that Zsnes is more convenient to configure, especially the controls.

I read in an internet post that the new Nintendo Wii (I HATE the name) will offer a service thru which you can access and play ALL the old SNES and NES games and many Sega Gensis games. This sounds waaaayyyyy cool!

Anyone else know more details?
