I was under the impression that the Pyramids of Egypt kept it's status, so I was really shocked by this. I've been to Chichen Itza and: if you're talking about the sun-snake the observatory, the well, the ball court and everything else I say yes, but if your talking about the pyramid itself (which is a serious challenge to ascend and descend) I'd rate Chaco Canyon over it. Stonehedge, yes!!!!

The pyramids have honorary status. They remain the only existing wonder of the ancient world IIRC.

These are new ones.

Personally, I'd leave off the statue and the Taj. *shrug*

Stonehenge is an enigma, but I agree that it is not a "wonder" in the sense I think that they were looking for.

It's too bad that, for "modern" wonders, they seem to have excluded anything modern. Skyscrapers, bridges, things like that.

Criteria was "discovered or built within the last 2000 years" IIRC.

The Taj is a thing of exquisite beauty - to watch it's colours change from rose red to blinding white to the orange of early evening is to experience something very special indeed. The tragedy is that the Taj is dying. Polution is peeling away its facade and eroding its stone inexorably year by year and the Indian government appear powerless to stop it. 'Thus does the beauty of the world become less than it was'. Still, as our guide for the day told us "There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who have seen the Taj Mahal - and those who haven't".

Machu Picchu on the other hand would qualify much better for the list had the restoration been more sensitive. To me the place had no 'feel' to it. It was a manicured experience in lhe same manner as its manicured lawns. Where the Taj must be sensitively restored to preserve its beauty - and there are artisans in India more than capable of this - Machu Picchu should have been left with some of its wilderness appeal intact and not transformed into this sterile recreation of its former state. (nb Tha Phrom in Cambodia gives a perfect example of what should have been done in Peru with Machu Picchu).

Great Pic though Sarge - and a really sad story about how they destroyed their own culture long before any contact with the outside world.

I'm not a Christian, but whoever voted to leave the temple dedicated to the holy wisdom of god off the list can go fornicate themselves with a rusty shovel.

1) Hagia Sophia
2) Angkor Wat
3) Gaudi's sand castle
4) The fact that I have not yet stolen Nike of Samothrace
5) My rock garden, after I steal Nike of Samothrace and place her there
6) The Crystal Palace
7) Stephen R. Donaldson

Why was I not included in this voting?! I've got my eye on you, Switzerland!
I know what an analogy is! It's like a thought...with another thought's hat on...?

Is the show to do with oranges as a fruit or oranges as in 'the orange men' of Ireland (or indeed the orange revolution of the Caucuses)? [Sounds and looks good fun either way!]
