zOMG Help! Phoneline issue.
This probably isn't what this forum is for, but I'm looking for some assistance. I was trying to get AT&T/SBC DSL in my apartment, and apparently everything was supposed to be A-OK. They 'turned on' both the phone and the dsl, but my wall jack wasn't getting a dial tone. A technician came out and left a note saying that the line going to the apartment building, and the line going from the 'box' to the apartment itself was fine, so the problem had to be in the apartment itself. I took the phone jack off the wall and noticed that there were a whole lot of 'loose wires' that weren't connected at all.
Does anyone know how to find out what wires go where on a phone jack to make it work? O.O

Start where you are,
use what you have,
do what you can.

btw, does your DSL line require filters?

Some variants of DSL connections, like ADSL and VDSL, typically work by dividing the frequencies used in a single phone line into two primary 'bands'. The ISP data is carried over the high frequency band (25Khz and above) whereas the voice is carried over the lower frequency band (4Khz and below). (See the ADSL article on how the high frequency band is sub-divided). The user typically installs a DSL filter on each phone. This filters out the high frequencies from the phone, so that the phone only sends or receives the lower frequencies (the human voice), creating two independent 'bands'. Thus the DSL modem and the phone can simultaneously use the same phone line without interfering with each other.

ummm, doesn't the company you're paying for service actually install the service? or are you just trying to save money? I've never heard of just "turning on" dsl or otherwise, you at least need a modem, right? I installed my digital phone and internet my self, but I already had cable tv so it was just a matter of "hooking it up" (the cable/phone modem). DSL is alot trickier (and slower) not to mention problematic. Ever consider broadband thru your cable company?
