Any stories comparable to TC? Looking for a new distraction

Post by cwm »

Thanks in advance,

Before I ask for your views on books comparable to TC I should offer what I've been reading as of late.

The Codex Alera books 1 through 6 (Academ's Fury, Cursor's Fury etc...)
Really good story.

That's it.

After reading TC I seem to compare every Author to Stephen. This makes it difficult to enjoy other Authors.

Jim Butcher comes real close but... He finally introduced a map of the land in the 6th (last?) book.

Any ideas?

I tried reading the first book of the Dresden Files(Jim Butcher) yet the idea of that series seems to "fun" or "Dick Tracy-ish?" for my taste.

I tried the first chapter of "Ill Wind" (Weather Warden, Book 1) by Rachel Caine but... eh. A bit to contemporary.

Speaking of contemporary "American Gods" was an ok read.

Now I'm about to try "A Game of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin

I wish other Authors would at least include a glossary. A glossary is like a whole new story. And would it kill to include a simple line drawling of a map?

It's the little things you know.

Guess I'm stuck with Ayn Rand "The Return of the Primitive."

You guys have great taste so I would like your views.

Thanks again.

P.S.

I'm using a Kindle 2 and I like Series rather than one book...

My cover is blown!

First, be Welcome to the Watch, cwm.
Be Well Come and True.

When you can, come post an introduction in the Say Hello in Here thread so we can get to know you even more. Glad to see you jump right in. Feel free to explore the Watch.

As to your question, have you considered Zindell's Neverness or The Ea Cycle? You may also want to turn back to SRD himself, and give The Gap Cycle a try, if you haven't already.

A lot of Watchers here enjoy The Malazan Book of the Fallen and discuss it in the Erikson forum, should you want to check it out.

If you're starting Martin's A Game of Thrones, you may also want to peek in to the Martin forum.

Come on down to both General Fantasy/SciFi Discussion and The Library as well. Not all Watchers visit all parts of the Watch, and you may get different answers in those forums than you will here in Gen Dis.

Again, welcome.

Oh hell yes, read the Gap series. Donaldson's best work IMO. And the Malazan books are awesome.

And welcome to the Watch. :D

Greetings. Simple. The Bible. There you will find a superior writing style and a never ending story. To date I have not found a writer who can keep my attention long enough to enjoy the second chapter other than the Holy Spirit and SRD. My feeling on SRD is he has been blessed with the gift of words. This is the only explanation I have found to the question of SRD and his ability to get into our heads, but not only that...our hearts!
