it is hacked (don't open it - trust me) and I think our new friend above may be the culprit. Either way, this thread needs to be deleted. Going onto SRD's site messed up my computer so this post entices people to check.

Interesting; "our new friend" has been a member for a bit more than three years, but the OP was the first post from the account. It may be premature to point fingers...but concern is warranted.

Although it has been three years and a troublesome circumstance to bring mokum out of lurker status, I appreciate him calling our attention to the hack of SRD's site. I have an old phone number for romeo, so while I do not know if it will get through to him, I attempted to send him a text informing him that several Watchers have said SRD's site has been hacked. I am hoping he already knows, but just in case he doesn't, perhaps that will draw his attention to it, if it gets through.

So I say...

Be Welcome to the Watch, mokum.
Be Well Come and True.

Now that you have broken your silence, don't be a stranger. Post a bit here and there; with the variety of topics the Watch covers, there must be a thread somewhere which interests you.

Well fudge.

As I was afraid of, the number I have for romeo is no longer his. Hopefully someone has been able to get in touch with him...

...and am trying a different mobil number for him I came across. Here's hoping.

Huzzah! The second number was valid.
via text, romeo wrote:Just found out myself. My hosting company got hit HARD early this morning - "hundreds, if not thousands" of sites. Probably the same guy who hacked google back in '07. It appears that only index.PHP files were affected. I'll upload them again tomorrow morning when I get back home to the computer. Please pass this along to the Watch.

I am glad I now have a way of contacting romeo if needed. But he did find out without me contacting him first. So, no thanks is necessary. Still, now that I have a reliable way of getting in touch with him, perhaps he will be informed quicker of issues with the site, if needed in the future.

So many questions, Sarge!
sgt.null wrote:so i smokum tru or the culprit?
Don't know. I trust lorin's intuition a lot, but there isn't hard evidence yet. I treat Menolly's greeting as analogous to that accorded Covenant by the Old Lords. Mokum has appeared amid ominous omens, but we are True and therefore we greet him as such. The test of lomillialor can be administered at its proper time.
sgt.null wrote:what srd site are we talking about?
The official SRD site, which Romeo administers and where the Gradual Interview appears. There is a link to it at the bottom of the index page of the Watch...but give it a day or so before you try it. According to lorin, going there messed up her computer. I visited the site before seeing her warning, but I have full-strength VIPRE protection on my system and if there was any malware that the hacked site was trying to install, it got nowhere with me.
sgt.null wrote:how come when i triple post people get upset?
Menolly's triple post was a play-by-play of her efforts on all our behalf. Besides, with what you know of my friendship with her, can you imagine me getting upset at her for a triple post? Tease her lightly, sure, but never more than that...and it should be noted that I would not do much more to you for the same offense.

I appreciate the fact that Mokum brought the issue to our attention.

However, I do not like where this thread has gone. For the sake of argument, let us assume that Mokum was the culprit (doesn't seem likely to me). What good does a public witch hunt do? These issues need to be brought to the attention of the admins. Unless you have proof, something like that is just too defamatory to accuse someone of.

People lurk. It is entirely likely that since the release of Fatal Revenant, which mentions this site, people have decided to check out our board, became interested in the amazing resource that is stephenrdonaldson.com, and so on and just don't feel the need to post. In fact, it's probably a good thing to keep in mind that for every listed online member, there are at least three people who, like myself, have decided to hide their online presence or just do not feel the need to log in or even register. As Mokum likely proves, lurkers are a valuable resource to any site and should not be abused.

The internet is a giant Sarangrave, so tread carefully.

That'll teach me not to read the whole thread. It's Menolly's fault. :D

I mailed Romeo, but obviously unnecessarily.

And yeah, given Romeo's comment about it, I don't think there's any reason to think ill of mokum.

It shouldn't have messed up your computer either though Lorin. What exactly happened to it?

always a wise course of action.

as to SD :

1) so i smokum tru or the culprit? - congrats on figuring that mess out. sometimes i am no better than a monkey banging at the keyboard.

2) you would think i would have visited the official SRD by now. I must be his worst fan...

3) I was joking of course about the triple. I may soon try a quad post. i will stretch before doing so of course.

4) I am inevitable on the Watch it seems.

Syl - thank you for your continued tolerance of me. why you guys have yet to make a permanent ban of me is curious at the least...

Official site's back up and running. All the index.php files were overwritten, and any index.htm files had a new index.php file dropped into its directory (the server will use index.php over index.htm). Other than that, it was non-destructive.

I think I'm going to backup my index.php files with random-looking filenames. And write a script that's run every half hour to compare the contents of the index file in that directory with its backup - and copy the real data back into the index.php file if it's been modified. I don't change index.php files very often, so it shouldn't be hard to maintain something like this.

*sigh*
And then the ravens pecked out his eyes.

I admit it. He went too far when he stopped the GI. I had to strike back.
