plus there's gonna be "Dark Shadows."
And we'll be filming St. Null in "the Secret Life of Death" which will have some Thomas Covenant elements (transportation to another world where people live closer to the earth; a magic staff).

I was going to say LZ that there is only one vampire film, and only one Dracula (of course I refer to the incomperable Bela Lugosi in the RKO production of 1931) but then I remembered F W Murneau's Nosferatu with Max Shreck and realised that there have been loads. Gosh - even F F Coppola's one with Gary Oldman was great fun, not to mention 30 Days of Night (which didn't have Dracula in it but was pretty damned good all the same!

Just come across a film described as 'the truly terrifying film Vampyre directed by Carl Theodor Dryer'. This is a new one on me LZ - have you seen or come across it?

"Vampyr" 1932. Famous scene where the victim dreams he is being buried in a glass coffin-- a shot that we used to open our own film. PJ Harvey refers to this famous scene in her song "I can hardly wait."

I think it's public domain too, although I might be mistaken.

Yes - that would be the one. They had a still of the scene you refer to in the ad I saw (on Sky's home page) a few days ago.

I don't know what your feelings are LZ, but it seems to me that the current trend of teenage vampire flicks spearheaded by the 'Twilight' franchise, is taking the genre in a direction I'm not all that keen on. In fairness they are not designed for old codgers like me, but are aimed chiefly at the teenage girl market, where the 'Byronic' archetype os sulky outsider can used to maximum effect, but all the same - give me a good old dark spine tingler any day. 'Shadow of the Vampire', the John Malcovitch portrayal of the making of F W Murneau's Nosferatu is I think my favorite of recent years (Interview with a Vampire was good, but not a true vampire film).

As an aside LZ, a few years ago I went to Romania and spent a few weeks in the Carpathians and up in Moldova by the Ukranian border. I went through a village in the mountains where two weeks previously they had dug up a recently deceased inhabitant and done the old stake through the heart thing because they maintained that since the man had died a plague had affected thier livestock and in thier oppinion he was to blams. This is a very strange country in it's backwaters, and I am always suprised more is not made in the films of it's dark folklore of Moroi, Strigoi and Varcolaci.

I have just re-read Stoker's Dracula for the umpteenth time - how much do I love that book - and will shortly embark on Elizabeth Kostova's 'The Historian' which I cannot recommend enough if you have not come across it before.

This may offend many people, Peter, but I forsaw all of this horrible twilight stuff when I saw Anne Rice's novels become very popular among goth kids.
In my opinion, her depiction of Lestat, while maintaining the vampire's native forbidden sexuality, put an unpleasant gloss on it. The Vampire, in her hands, became a PUSSY!!!!!
Peter, you must come visit us in the mountains soon. I don't know how much like the Carpathians this is, but my aunt bought a cabin here because it reminded her of Viena.
I am hoping to lure Jean Louis Costes out here from Paris. Our collaboration was interupted by his imprisonment for enciting a race riot with his controversial (and very anti-rascist) album "throw the white women to the arabs."
Jean Louis is a courageous performer and loves going to distant jungles in the former French empire.
I want very badly to perform with him in the heart of aboriginal New Guinea. I hope the natives have strong pot and kava kava!

it is hard to see anyone giving us a Visa. I am actually daring to believe my Baha'i faith will sponsor our show!
Why?
I sat next to a naked man with a bone through his nose at the Baha'i world congress in New york in 1992.
I'm sure he will welcome me as a friend and brother-- and not try to eat me! (please understand that's a JOKE!)

 Fully understood LZ, as with the notorious recipie post which alas was locked before I could add my contribution that amongst cannibal cultures it is felt that by far the best eating is to be had from the french while the spanish are apparently virtually inedible (perhaps your next cullinary creation should be '....stuffed with truffles and seethed in it's mothers milk, served alongside feathery arab pastries and a young sauterne - say Chateau d' Yquem....')

Yes I too think Anne Rice has much to answer for in the descent of vampire into it's current appaling 'handsome but tortured, good but misunderstood' state. But I think '30 Days of Night' (and not it's attrocious sequel) might help - there's nothing good about those mofo's at all!

A quick perusal of Jean-Louis Costes' back catalogue (might be a dangerous description if you get my drift) convinces me that a colaboration between the two of you could only result in what might well be a 'life changing experience'. I wonder if even the traditionally broad-minded American art scene is ready for that yet! He sounds like a fascinating man LZ - and I'm guessing one well worth listening to.

I studied with a Bhha'i some 30 plus years ago who was involved with Bernard Leach (also a Baha'i) and his St Ives pottery movement. At that time the faith was struggling against severe repression, mainly in Iran I believe, and it is good to hear from you that it endures to this day in sufficient good health to hold a congress in NY.

Once again your kindness in the offer of a visit to your mountain cabin is greatly appreciated. I have just had my annual vacation - to Istanbul this year - and am alas so broke as a result that future trips will have to be placed on hold untill i) I am solvent again or ii) I win the lottery (whichever comes first!)

start contemplating your barter postition in the new economy. We will undergo a radical shift. We are storytellers, shamen, and perhaps beekeepers-- honey is a powerful food that will be much in demand for people who will be eating ramen and survival meals. Not anyone can get it, it requires trust and raport with animals that can sting you to death!
Be advised we live in filth and squalor. If we continue to amass valuables, we're going to have to start stacking tires around our cabin as a defense perimeter!
Cheer, Peter! You are indeed unfettered!

I'm not sure where LZ's sympathies are going to lie when it comes to a Zombie war. It strikes me you may want to keep him firmly in your range of vision when that sh*t goes down! :)

Dario Argento! Lovely. I hope the goblins still do the music.
Monsters, they eat
Your kind of meat
And they're moving as far as they can
And as fast as they can
