Cigars
I've seen a few comments from time to time from other posters alluding to cigar smoking, but a search of this site reveals no thread where this subject has been addressed directly. I've smoked cigars for years but I've recently seen my interest increase from that of a passing fancy into a full blown hobby. So I'll ask: are there any other cigar smokers in this forum with an interest in discussing their preferences, impressions, recommendations, or the subject in general?

I'm more of a "passing fancy" guy myself... namely because I'm in an environment where smoking, drinking, and all the other finer things in life are frowned upon in extreme measure and considered a sin where public intervention would be required.
So it has been a while since I've enjoyed watching a sunset with the taste of smoke in my mouth, aware of the approaching thunderheads from the west carried by that same wind that sends my expelled cigar smoke adrift like a wraith beckoning me away...
In either event, I like to smoke cigars before I eat a meal. Various wonderful flavors come out that weren't there before.

That is both interesting and poetically tragic Orlion, and I am intrigued that you smoke before a meal (I typically do the opposite). Do you incorporate a libation of some kind? And do you find that the cigar affects your palate during the meal afterwards?

I don't smoke 'em, but I buy them every now and then for a business associate of mine. The first time I bought them, I didn't know anything about cigars, I just wanted to get him something special and I knew he regularly smoked Dominican Cohibas- a daily $10 cigar. (This was 2008-Cubans were "illegal"). So after some research, I got him a Fuente Opus X sampler. He didn't know what they were and asked his regular tobacconist about them and was told that they were better than Cubans. After he tried them, he said,"You can buy me a $100 cigar anytime!"
They weren't actually $100 cigars, but they must have been good. I've given them a couple of times since then. I can tell he always appreciates them.

Heh, the best cigar I've had was Dominican. My friend has a father that brings cigars back every time he goes on a cruise. My friend, being free with the truth at times, claimed they were Cubans. Talking with his father, I found out that the plants were transported from Cuba but grown in the Dominican Republic. In either event, it was an excellent cigar.
My friend also brought me a couple cigars back from North Carolina one time. One made from Hondurian tobacco, the other known reverently as the Series G. The Series G was potent, and though we each finished our individual cigars we were both pretty knocked out by then.
Yes, cigars do change my palate. In some of my college years, I'd smoke them solely because I loved the taste of Coca-Cola afterwards. Food afterwards has that hint of tobacco smoke, which is excellent with a good cigar or pipe weed. A non-light beer is also a favorite of mine to drink during smoking a cigar, though one time I had a glass of Amontillado and that went pretty well.

I've been drinking coffee with a few different cigars lately, with good results. Of course, when I'm at work it's not possible to do the scotch thing.

I used to smoke them once in awhile. back when I smoked cigs. haven't had either in years.
I preferred my pipe mostly. I really miss the pipe for the entire process... cleaning, packing, lighting, smoking.
used to smoke clove cigs when I'd go to the local bar in Concord and listen to some fine New Hampshire bands (Thanks to Gravity, Choosy Moms, Heavens to Murgatroid) while drinking Black Russians.

Back when I smoked it was mostly hand-rolled cigs or pipe. Anyway, closer to topic:
He wanted Cuba opened up cuz apparently it is beautiful and fun...but not for the cigars. According to him, the farming and science and breeding of tobacco have advanced/improved so much that pretty much everyone can make better cigars than Cuba...they didn't keep up.

I have a limited experience of fine cigars gathered from two main scources - a short visit to Havana and crossing the Atlantic on the QM2. In Cuba the cigar of choice seemed to be the 'Cohiba' and I smoked a good few of the different sizes on offer. On the ship I visited the cigar lounge each evening after dinner and found a 'Romeo y Julieta' of a size that seemed to last along side a couple of brandies. I can't get over just how good a fine cigar and a brandy complement each other and now I would never have one without the other. Alas it is only infrequently that finances allow me to splash out on a decent example of both and I therefore tend to stick with what I know rather than get too adventurous. I've tried a few 'King Edwards' but am not so taken with them as either of the two brands I mention above (but the more 'romantic' nature of the settings where I learned of the other two perhaps color my judgement.) In short, I doubt I'll ever take up cigars as a hobby as Don has - but I fully understand the draw to do so.
(N.b. I hope the cigars I mention qualify for the bracket 'fine' - I shall feel silly if they're the equivalent of beefburgers next to fillet steak!

Romeo y Julieta is on of my favorite overall brands, and Cohibas are legendary Cuban puros that I have not been fortunate enough to experience. You have nothing to be ashamed of, Peter.

If I do smoke a "proper" cigar, it's also usually RyJ because they're easy to come by, good and relatively inexpensive.
Enjoy after meals with another glass of red wine.
It's very rare for me to do the whole "strips of cedar" rigmarole, although I do have a few lying around. I'm also terribly guilty of not looking after my cigars properly, which costs only me in terms of flavour and longevity of course.
And seeing Peter mention King Edwards...I think those were the first cigars I ever smoked as a teenager...got me started on them.

Had my first K E at 11y.o.(ish) in a woods at boarding school. My mate pinched 3 from his dad during the holidays and we got stuck in once the term started again. Alas didn't have a glass of Courvoisier to savour with it but they didn't like us breaking the rules and it was before 5pm!
