Burning Man Artists Community

Post by lorin »

Has anyone ever heard of this event every August. It is pretty amazing. I watched a video about it on showtime and started looking into it. Its a one week meeting in the middle of Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Its all about creating art pieces with a different theme every year. Looks pretty amazing.

I may try and find some people to go next year though it looks pretty tough. 60,000 people attend for the one week in the desert. There is no money allowed in the event (tickets are pricey though) and the only things sold are coffee and ice. You have to bring everything you need to survive.

Any adventurers interested in giving it a try next summer?

*There* you are! I've been wondering what you were up to, lorin.

Wadds went to Burning Man a few years ago and had an awesome time, by all accounts.

I first came across Burning Man many years ago [a couple of decades maybe] and for a while had a 'burning' [ ] desire to attend one. At that time the location used to change each year and was kept a strict secret untill shortlt before the event. Now it seems to have settled down in pretty much one place. The high spot each year is the finale where the huge 'whicker man' is , you guessed it, burnt. I would still like to go - but by all acounts it can get pretty bohemian, perhaps a little more than I can run to, and for that reason I decided it may be best left to other [perhaps less inhibited] free spirits.

I also get the sense that it's a little more high-spirited than I'd be comfortable with at my advanced age. ;) Maybe we could get a geezer contingent together? Rent a big RV with a bump-out, and share fine wine and foodie meals while the kids sleep in their tents on the sand?

In my prime I was never much of a sight naked and things have definitely not improved with age. As it seems to be almost de riguer at times at the Burning Man I think I'll give it a miss.

I'm down, and I've been 'planning' on getting out there for it for years... oh, and seeing my family who live about 60 miles (a stone's throw, as far as NV driving distances go) from there. I could also serve as a local tour guide for other places in the area (Reno/Tahoe, Pyramid Lake, various truck stops along I-80). For a small fee, I'd even not hold everyone hostage for a walking tour of my home town (Fernley, the last bastion of civilization for most traveling to Burning Man), highlighting various failures and successes of one Mr. Frost.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Just a quick question Lorin - how do you pay for the coffe and ice if no money is allowed in to the event? No - on second thoughts don't answer that. 8O

Hahaha, y'know, I never even considered that. :D RV's are not a thing in my country. I wasn't even being that serious before...it would be an improvement over a tent even without it. Now it's sounding a lot better.

It made for a good Malcolm in the Middle episode. Hal had an RV, and the crowd thought it was domestic life performance art. I still can't believe that's the same guy in Breaking Bad.

I think Malcolm got laid.

This would have appealed to me in college. But that's when I used to go to Phish and Grateful Dead shows. Now I'd rather go camping without 60,000 people.

I'm fine, thanks.

Seems most people have an RV and bikes. I would love to try it. But the cost is prohibitive to say the least. After a week there I could see doing some real camping to detox.

They have Burning Man events all over the world, including South Africa, Austrailia and Ireland.
