Li-Fi

Post by Hashi Lebwohl »

I'll have to track down any IEEE documentation about it but the next generation of wireless signal is on its way--Li-Fi. Tests indicate that the signals allow for transmission rates of up to 200 Gbps, which is significantly faster than fiber optic. The only drawback I can see right now is that it uses LED pulses, so physical interference could be a problem. Still...FTTP connected to your modem then LiFi to your router and 802.11ac to your devices should still be pretty darned fast, but unwieldy since you will have three different protocols going between the equipment. Meh--they are computers, they can handle it.

Whatever happened to those Internet protocols they wrote the allowed a person in Germany to move a remote robotic arm in Japan in real time? That was a couple of years ago now....

Led pulses through the air? Surely that would also require line of sight?

Which is why it will never be more than a niche system allowing permanently-fixed pieces of hardware to communicate. You won't be getting Li-Fi to your mobile device, that's for certain.

Still...if anyone can get an optical system built (I think Lucent Labs was working on an optical motherboard at one point in time) with Li-Fi connections then that system would have inherent protection against EMP.

If only we could figure out a way to create a hand-held device that could detect neutrinos then that would be the way to go. You can't intercept or block the neutrinos even if you detect them and there isn't a way to edit the frames during transmission so the only real problem with privacy would be people listening in. I suppose the other problem would be making sure that the held-held detector could also generate the neutrino pulses being sent.
