Do You Have a Doppelganger?

Post by peter »

I'm not sure exactly what a doppelganger is, but for the purposes of this thread a 'double' will do, and (suprise, suprise) I have one. Here's how I found out.

About thirty plus years ago I used to go for a drink in a local pub, and due to work commitments was unable to go on a group skiing tour that the establishment organised. On arriving at the hotel (I was later told) my drinking buddies were amazed to find me sitting at the bar (of course they headed straight to the bar after five minutes in their rooms - they were my buddies after all!) downing a pint just as I would do so at home. With cat calls and whoops they descended on this poor clown, only to discover it was very much not me - just my apparently identical double who obviously shared some of my proclivities.

Strangely enough, there is another feature of doubles that I think, makes the phenomena even more interesting. In my early twenties there was a band called Squeeze (iirc), whose lead singer was a guy called Glenn Tillbrook. We were said to bear an uncanny resemblance to eachother - but interestingly I have since discovered, it was only at that particular age. Now we look nothing alike at all, and I've seen a photo of him as a child to which I bore no resemblance. So it's like for a brief period your ongoing visage sort of crosses that of someone else, and you momentarily appear almost indistinguishable from each other. I think that's great - and really only to be expected as opposed to the opposite where you are born identical and stay so over the course of your growth and ageing. If this latter happens then it probably is the identical from from whom you were separated at birth.

Well it would be surprising if it didn't happen really; there are only a limited number of variables that combine to make up a face and if just most of them are replicated it will probably serve to pass cursory scrutiny.

There was apparently a doppelganger related public panic in Victorian England - but this may have been more related to a sort of spiritual doubling of an actual individual which I think is more in keeping with the true meaning of the word than my use above.

One of me is quite enough.

On the contrary, in my case I could only consider multiple copies of me to be a significant addition to the overall quality of human stock, the increased improvement being a simple multiplication by the number of said copies in circulation.

I have eight and counting. I am frequently mistaken for someone else, even by members of my family.

The Dark Side is making a new clone army. Probably nothing to worry about.

It didn't happen to me and it's slightly OT, but some years ago our (former and now late) principal/headmaster met one of the newly employed teachers (a man from Italy) in a beer garden and talked to him. He wouldn't get an answer, just blank looks. After some time he gave up trying to communicate, thinking, "What a jerk did I hire there? Doesn't even talk to his boss!" Turned out later it was not our new colleague, but his twin brother form Naples, Italy who was there on vacation, but didn't understand or speak a single word in German.

On a related note, the GF watched this yesterday:

A doppelganger situation led to the discovery of a strange research project...

Every time I look into my mirror I see my doppelganger.

Man is he a ugly old geezer...
What's this silver looking ring doing on my finger?

Wow! That's a lot!
I apparently have two.
At a dock where I fish often in the summer, at least a dozen people have come up and started talking to me...usually beginning with some form of "Hey, Steve, I didn't know you fished!" [[my name is not Steve]].

The better story is my wife went to a tech theater conference with a bunch of her students. At some point, a couple of them came speeding out of a presentation and said to her "When did your husband come?"

Which of course I hadn't.

They tried to point me out to her...but I was lost in the crowd.

Sometime in the next day or two, they spotted the guy again, and they all took pics and texted them to my wife, who texted them to me...
I swear, I'd have thought the guy was me, too---even DRESSED like me, and same hair/facial hair and glasses!. [[and my hair/facial hair are---well not unique, but uncommon...especially in my age group]].

And it seems he's a regular attendee...
A former professor of ours spotted him/thought it was me at the same conference in a different year.
Sig-man, Libtard, Stupid piece of shit. change your text color to brown. Mr. Reliable, bullshit-slinging liarFucker-user.
the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

"I swear, I'd have thought the guy was me, too" <-- hah, I am amused.
also, I note that the world of the the internet and texting that we live in produces some wacky situations.
On the plus side, "You look exactly like this one guy we know!" *is* a pretty funny reason to be taking someone's picture... to text someone... etc.

Khaliban- do you have any specific funny stories? Eight *IS* a lot.
