I still play QIII frequently. Use a few modifications to spice things up. There is a patch called "Voosh" that allows you to specify what weapons and power ups you use and how long they last during a game. I often set it for BFG only with flight on. Its pretty cool.

Quake III was mind-blowing when it first came out, and it's still an awesome game. And yeah, Doom III and Quake III are very different, but I'm going to have to go with Doom myself, as I always prefer an engrossing single-player experience to a multi-player one. Then again, few games offer a rush like online gaming (Counter-Strike, especially)

Unreal Tournament for PC (the original) remains my favorite for fragfests, not that I'm a hardcore gamer by any means. I only played the Quake III demo, never the actual game, and it was fun, no question. But when UT came out, it completely, utterly blew me away and made me forget about QIII (well, almost). UT was the most addictive First Person Shooter experience since the original Quake.

I love Quake III. I think it is more fun than newer games like Halo because it's so freakin' fast! The physics of that game beat any out there (okay, I haven't played a lot of them). Once I got into strafe jumping, it really took off for me. I feel like I'm doing ballet with a machine gun. You can have all the cool graphics you want, and it still won't feel as real as a game with good physics and movement.
I can't wait for virtual reality. What's taking so long?!?

My boyfriend was home on leave recently... My computer became a permanent fixture at his house. We LAN'd with Quake all the time and I actually beat him a couple times, and I've beaten 5 or 6 levels on nightmare. I was pretty impressed with myself, heh. He's the one that really got me into it and now we're pretty even. There's nothing like getting him in the back with gauntlet while he's doing his taunt

Haha The Gauntlet is awesome. "HUMILIATION!"
I bound mine to a handy key so I can switch to it in an instant when charging into a group.
MM, if you can keep up with the bots on NightMare, or even HardCore level, you should be able to hold your own.
Aaah, I miss the LAN's. Add in some psychadelics, and we were good for a 36-hour session on the trot.
Those were the days...

Since I moved into a flat with a permanent lan setup, my flatmate and I have ususally managed to get in about 3-4 hours of deathmatching a week. Sometimes I even win a round against him and I can consistently win nightmare bots (exept against xaero with a rail). He's super skilled so i have to catch him when he's tired after work

So, anybody still playing online? I've been playing recently as Min Donner.
I got a late start on this game, and then took off a year, and now I'm back. I've just recently beat all the levels on nightmare (except the last one), and felt ready to go online. I've done fairly well against some, and got blown away by others. The railfests are insane. I'm okay with a railgun, but some of those guys are insanely good. I've beaten a room full of people a couple times. That's always nice.
So, anyone feel like playing? I'm not even sure how to set up a server, but I think it would be fun to play against a group I kind of "know." None of my friends play it.
Also, I'd like to know how some of those guys move the way they do. I can rocket jump and strafe jump, but some of them move in crazy ways I didn't think was possible. Maybe someone could help me out with that. In particular, they use the lightning gun like a grapple or a spiderman web. It looks crazy, and it's difficult to shoot them (especially with the rail) because they can rapidly change directions midair.
