Anele

Post by High Lord Tolkien »

Runes pg 95

Anele: "They search for him. It pursues him. Always he is persued. If they take him, he will not escape it."

"They" are the Masters.
"It" is a ceasure.

Why would a caesure "pursue" Anele?

Later, on pg 98, Linden says she is sure that the caesure is NOT after Anele but then "wondered "Why did he think that the mad distortion wanted him?"

But at this point in the story Linden doesn't know that the caesures are creations.

I can't remember, does the book ever mention again whether or not Anele is being pursued by caesures?
I don't remember it being an issue after this chapter.
Is Anele just remembering his initial caesure "abduction"?

*BUT* has Anele been wrong about anything yet so far in the book?
(Other than his own worth.)

What do you all think?

Freeze Frame

Post by lurch »

...You ask some interesting questions Tolkien on the High. Your first set of questions are answered in the unraveling of the Mystery of Anele. The experience of time traveling in the caesure was too much for the guy and he went bonkers. We, the reader, come to understand step by discovery step that Linden takes. Yet, Anele remains bonkers.

The last question,,has Anele done anything wrong,,like the above, the answer depends on which frame of reference you are looking at. I've said it before, Time is like a character in Runes. IT could be said, that Anele made a mistake in trusting Linden to keep him out of the Masters clutches. She failed. Yet, at end of Runes, we see that Her failure, may have been redeemed. Anele also may have redeemed himself.

Whether the redemption holds, well, Time will tell. There is a perspective being projected by the author, its rather grand I think. Its not the wide angle shot of a camera, but of change over Time. As the author emphasized,,continuity of cause and effect,,makes the correct answer today,,wrong by tomorrow.,,or the correct answer in Chapter 6,,wrong or incorrect or no longer applicable in Chapter 10. As long as we have that thread, that continuity, we can see and understand the change, the evolution ( please lets not go there) if you will. But with out the attatchment of previous to current to future, none of it makes any sense and if not careful,,one can end up like a few Hippy Flower Childs I knew, who did one too many experiments with detatching their minds from the continous thread of reality, that is , they haven't come back. And speakin about staying in touch, I'll end this reply now before I meander any further away from the ....whatever it was....MEL

Maybe I didn't mean not "done" anything wrong but rather "said" anything that was proven wrong.
One of the great things about SRD's characters in the Chronicles is that they know what they're talking about.
For the most part. ;)

Anele was so scarred to be captured by the Masters...even after they promised not to harm him--even after they proved that they would not harm him......why?

He said that he is the only help for the Land.
Undoubtedly because he once wielded the Staff.

But he wants to help. I imagaine this is why he tried so hard to avoid the Masters. Because if he's not free to wield any Earthpower, he feels the Land will fail.

Anele (obviously) represents Earthpower in the Land. Unfortunatly, this means that Earthpower is Blind, half crazy, and easily accessable by the Despiser...But it is nor without hope; it wants to serve beauty rather than Despite, just as Anele wants to.

Hopefully, when Covenant comes back into the picture, Linden will convince him how important Anele is--and he will take him from the Masters...although, this will probebly prove to be Fatal--as the Haruchai are rarely mistaken about who they trust/distrust.

I think it highly unlikely that the "company" will remain in Revelstone, part of the genre is 'questing' and I'd guess Anele will be a part of the "company" that undertakes whatever the quest may be.

The Masters may not go but I'd guess they'd include a rep or two, the tension between them and Stave and Esmer, might make for interesting reading as a by-plot.

I'd also guess that there would continue to be tension between the Masters and Anele and that's Linden's role of protector/carer would continue.

Interestingly, (and of course I could be wrong and SRD bases the whole next three books in Revelstone) if the Caesures DO follow Anele, then they will also threaten the company, as well as being at hand should their time properties be required.

My take on Anele and the caesures is that they could in fact be seeking him out.
The caesures are an affront to the Law of Time. By its very nature, however, time does not want this affront. Time wants to abide by the Law and continue.
Perhaps the caesures pursue Anele because the Law needs to right itself. Anele is displaced by 3000 years, and should not be in the time he is.
And although caesures of themselves seem Lawless, the Law itself is still intact enough to want to "fix itself."

Another thought:
Certainly Joan is not of the mind to direct a caesure and control it, but Foul certainly is. Maybe he sees a threat in Anele that he hopes to counter by sweeping Anele away to yet another time, or to be forever trapped in all time at once, without ever having the ability to affect any one time.

One thing is certain: in the end, we will know. :)

An interesting note...SRD once (or twice) said that the Ceasures really don't affect much after the breaking of the Laws of Death and Life--with the obvious exception of the Demondim.

Well Anele is one of the Law of Life breakers, the other two are dead (Hollian and Caer)--I guess it wouldn't be much of a stretch that Time itself is trying to 'get' Anele

It may be that Anele was enceasured the first time because the ceasure he found went after him. So Anele's assumption of a tropism may be well-founded.

I can see several options. Ceasures may be attracted to (a) Anele's Earthpower; (b) Anele's time displacement; (c) Anele's having crossed the thresholds from life to death and death to life; or (d) Anele's role in the greater scheme of things. (This last would be assuming that Foul or someone is behind the whole thing.)

Now, out of all these things, I think it's (c) that has the most possibility. After all, there's a relationship between ceasures and the Laws of Death and Life. This makes it likely that there would be a relationship with someone who has taken advantage of their breaking.

Option (c) sounds most likely to me too. Afterall, when he was trapped by the first Ceasure, he hadn't yet been displaced in time

Did he really go bonkers though?
He was an Unfettered remember.
They all talked the way he did if I remember correctly.
So it just might sound like he's crazy to Linden when in fact he's quite sane.
I have to check it how the other Unfettered spoke.
The one in Andelain sounded pretty in control and forcefull but the others were all fragmented like Anele.

Lets take the Next Step...

Post by lurch »

There has been many a posting concerning Anele,,backwards, forwards , his history from incubation to current blind insanity,,(as prescribed by the good doctor),,what does he represent, what does it all mean.

Some musings follow. He hears the earth talking to him. The ancient rock speaks to his ears. Fascinating concept. What does it say? The granite backbone of the Land has a memory of all things Land,,and ,,in all its memory,,only now does it truly fear complete and utter destruction, itself being reduced to fine grains of dirt blown into the dark expanse that lays on the other side of the Arch of Time.

Such potential of utter destruction does exist in the real world. And this is where that damn line,,that upon first read,,seems so beautiful ,,but leaves a aftertaste of disquiet, how does it go?,,somebody used it as a signature,,somethingto the effect, that somebody of such beauty could only be appreciated in the Land..or ,,,yes,,Furls Fire uses a variant in her signature,,”this world wasn’t meant for someone as beautiful as you”….The author , if I recall correctly, uses a variant of that line in Runes.,,maybe that’s the line itself!..So..what am I getting at here?…Well, there is a negative in the statement,,” not”. The door that leads to ultimate despair remains available to be opened. If I can’t have “ beautiful as you”,,I don’t want any part of this world..With out you , this existence isn’t worth it…even the easy,,somebody as beautiful as you shouldn’t be troubled by the struggles of this world suggests a dark undercurrent….beauty and naieve’ will be quickly destroyed in this world…

So whats with all this destruction? The ancient granite reduced to dust,, Lord Silicosis already proclaiming victory,,claims of Thomas blowing up the whole deal,,the lack of The Creator, a” Godless” land …Linden figuring out how to split the fabric of space time,,all rather parallel to modern times…the despair , the threat of annihilation of all of us, because one wacko doesn’t suit another wacko..” No Mr Convenant, she told him for the 3rd time”….I mean,,it literally would take a H bomb to scare the living crap out of the ancient granite…” This world wasn’t meant for someone as beautiful as You” and what is going to change in that statement….the “ someone as beautiful as you” or the “ world”?

OH OH!..do you see it?..The “ Donaldson Trap”?…the either or..? the two choices that paradox each other..? the blossoming of despair.?..Mutually Assured Destruction,,mad indeed. I mean he did say,,” the mother of all endings” or close to that . So…maybe…the arc of the reader ends with the realization ,,that by the end, Anele is the only sane one…,,,???…..MEL
