Post by mystmaiden »

Just finished reading through the first and second chronicles and Runes. I'm glad I decided to read them all again before reading ROTE.
Now.. I starving for more.. anyone know the projected date of the next installement in the series? I know I saw a title list of all four proposed books in the Last Chronicles, now I can't find it :(

myst ...hmmm maybe I'll start over

Runes of the Earth - out last october/novemeber i think
Fatal Revenant - 2007
Shall Pass Utterly - 2010
The Last Dark - 2013
Tentitive titles and dates. :P
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

Full of the heavens and time.

Am I the only one who thinks "Shall Pass Utterly", while a nicely poetic phrase, is a pants title for a book?

No, you aren't the only one, CJ. ;)

But, as it's SRD who came up with the titles, I tend to cut him some slack.

Reminds me of a line from the movie Johnny Dangerously: "Did you know your last name is an adverb?" :P

A "pants" name?

Is that a cute way of saying it sucks? If so, I agree.

Actually, "The Last Dark" strikes me as wierder than "Shall Pass Utterly." At least I know where SPU comes from.

The Last Danlo, by Stephen R. Danloson

In which God Emperor Danlo Atreides III challenges Lord Foul to a Ritual of Deletion...and the Land, the Earth, and Arrakis are erased from existence.

Oops, sorry for the mega-spoiler! :P

No - I'm with you on that. Then again, I think "Lord Foul" is a dumb name for a villain, so there are some things I've learned to put up with.

Yes, "pants" is roughly the British equivalent of that bizarre Americanism about things sucking ;) But it's not cute. Underwear is rarely cute, particularly mine. Except the ones with the monkey face, they're quite cute.

The first time I read that name, I shared that opinion. But Lord Foul as a name quickly became one of the first things I really appreciated about the Chronicles. Foul possibly doesn't have a real name, and if he does, would he necessarily bother announcing it? So the Landers have to come up with a name for him themselves - hence the various titles (Corruption, the Grey Slayer, etc). There's a mighty being who is pretty damn vile; yep, Lord Foul fits quite well.

But I guess that's my complaint - I liked the other names so much better!

Heathen slime! danlo is from A Requiem for Homo Sapiens by David Zindell not GE of Dune! The Final Chrons' titles are great (you guys complain too much...) and at least one title goes straight back to LFB.. 8) (oh, btw bite me everyone! :x :P)

If Rowling can knock out a Harry Potter book every year, you would think SRD could do better than 2007! if Rowling worked like donaldson potter would have had a 30year sabbatical B4 he took on voldermort p.s. im sure voldermort is based on foul!

wow...my acct is still working..

does rowling read covenant? if so, thats really cool.

as per the name lord foul, the people of the land arent what you would call urban or technologically advanced or scientific. i think its realistic of donaldson to assume that a broad group of "primitive" (for lack of a better word at hand) people would use a broad and basic term.

think of our own: "the devil." creative.

Perhaps, but then the Chronicles would share the same dubious "quality" as Potter...

Whoa, Ageless Stranger returns after a 2 year absence! Welcome back! (We haven't met, heh.)

I'm sure there must be a better word to describe the people of the Land. The word "primitive" has too much of a disdainful air about it, IMO. It's the kind of word I'd expect the Despiser to use.

How about atavistic? unmodern? elemental--as in motivated by powerful natural forces or passions, as opposed to technological forces? :)

Come to think of it, I suppose the Bhrathair, with their more modernized culture and economy, might also perceive the people of the Land as being "primitive." No commerce and trade? No sailing vessels? Bah, the Bhrathair will have nothing to do with these people! :)

haha, thanks for the welcome back.

yeah i absolutely agree that theres a better word than primitive. i thought it sounded derogatory as well, which is why i said lack of a better word at hand. the ppl of the land were by no means stupid or unculture...maybe technologically challenged. like the amish.

I'd bet Rowling's books are easier to write. She certainly doesn't have to do as much publicity - people are lining up to buy them the minute they come out.
