The Old Man and the Sea
Lately I have been slowly reading my way through this tiny novel by Hemingway. It tells a very simple story about an elderly fisherman from Cuba, who has been having hard luck with his fishing for nearly three months, and goes out on a fishing trip on the ocean in a tiny boat hoping to catch a big fish.
While it is a short and simple story, it is a rich character study of that old fisherman. Hemingway explores his thoughts and dreams and memories while he is out at sea.
I have been savoring and enjoying it.

Last year I fought my way through a collection of Hemmingway short stories from the library--there were 71 in the book..I read about half of them, And I renewed it twice in doing so.
But I really wanted to read OMANS--I found out that we actually have a copy of it in our house..so in the next few months I'm going to give it a shot.
(I also found Heart of Darkness on our bookshelf--might try to wrangle that one too)

i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

Read both, the Pearl in school (many moons ago) and TOMATS of my own volition. Both great books telling stories of ordinary people suddenly getting the riches they'd always dreamed of.
The boat I am at the back of is a marlin fishing boat and I've game fished for almost 20 years catching (tag and release only) and crewing a couple of hundred of these magfnificent fish.
Hemmingway wrote about fishing in some detail and it's all accurate to the tiniest detail.
