They appear to be most active, and like to come to the roads at dawn and dusk. One theory is that they see reflections from a low sun on the road and mistake the glitter for water.
The main thing is when a lot of roos are active and about - and any animals really - is to keep the speed in check as you described. You just have to accept that the trip will take 10 minutes or 1 hour longer than planned. Otherwise it can get messy - and cold without a windscreen!
