Somewhere between 1:45 and 2:15. Depends on what kind of bread it is.

I turn the knob to the middle and put my trust in the toaster gods. Now eggo's on the other hand,I have found that they turn out best if midway thrue the toasting, you pop them up and rotate them so that they toast evenly.

 between 1:00 and 1:45 at the outside. I like mine to have the properties of bread, not carbon.

Over-cooking anything should be a crime.

i think the toast preference is a case of user created reality, Fist.

1:45 seems the average...

however, several good points were made...bread-type is a major factor,
for instance..
salt risen bread should border 2 min.
whereas wonder bread just can't take that kinda heat
rye should be good and toasty, close to 2:29
and bagels and english muffins should be damned crispy

and then there's machines...ah, toasters...

and toaster ovens! a whole different animal!

i love toast. :)

Fluff truly is one of humanity's greatest inventions.
-It's SOOOO much better on hot chocolate than whipped cream.
-The fudge recipe on the container truly IS "never fail."
