Rincewind, I'll tell you - sometimes translating the name doesn't help the story. I've read the Chronicles in english (both because I first bought them in England and because they were only released once in Italy, when I was a child, and never reprinted), but a few months ago I decided to see how good was the Italian translation, so I went on the web and poked around to see if any had posted the descriptions of the books with names and such. I found how they had named Saltheart Foamfollower in Italian.
The funny thing is that it's not a bad translation: it has exactly the same meaning as in english. But it doesn't evoke the same feeling at all: I don't know whether it's because I got to know him in english, or because of the Italian tradition for the names in children's literature, but the Italian translation of the name "Saltheart Foamfollower" sounded exactly as if it were a character's name in a children's book.
For those who are curious, and who know Italian, the translation was, as I recall, "Cuordisale Seguischiuma"... And I'm pretty sure that even those who do not speak Italian would cringe at the sound
