New Star Wars Novel about Darth Bane?

Post by duchess of malfi »

STAR WARS: DARTH BANE: PATH OF DESTRUCTION
by Drew Karpyshyn
“Always two there are…no more…no less. A master and an apprentice.”

With these words, Yoda introduced the world to the Rule of Two, the defining law of the evil Sith order. But once, thousands of years before the rise of Darth Sidious and Darth Vader, the Old Republic was rife with the evil Sith, who were a constant thorn in the side of the Jedi. It was a time of war and unrest, as the Sith made their bid to rule the galaxy.

In the midst of their ongoing war against the Jedi rose a young and ambitious Sith, Darth Bane, who recognized that greed and hunger for power were on the verge of destroying the entire Sith order. He knew that he was destined to be the next great Lord of the Sith, and by following his own path, he cultivated his power and made his plans. With patience and cunning, Bane plotted to wipe out the squabbling, ineffective Brotherhood of the Sith and replace it with a more powerful order, guided by his newly conceived Rule of Two. And to do that all he needed was to eliminate a few hundred of the most dangerous and devious Sith Lords of all time…. Jacket art by John Jude Palencar. (Approx. 336 pp.) 2006.

This book sounds quite promising (and Darth Bane sounds like he might be a really cool badass). 8)

But I have read some fairly poor Star Wars books, and am a bit leery of reading one I have not heard of before by an unfamiliar author. :?

Was just wondering if anyone has given this one a try? :?

Sounds like a great story, but like Duchess I'm tired of all of the bad SW books out there. I'll probably wait to hear a few ratings on this one before buying it.

I did end up getting this for one of my kids. He absolutely loved it - to the point where he will not give it to me so that I can read it. He has it hidden away somewhere to keep it safe from his brother.

If I ever get my hands on it, I will let you guys know how it is.

He finally passed it over to me a few days ago, and I finally had time to read it. It is not up to the level of my all time favorite Star Wars novel, the novelization of Revenge of the Sith, but it is still better than some 75% of Star Wars novels out there (I have read a lot of mediocre and bad and downright rancid Star Wars novels, though - so you might want to take that with the appropriate grain of salt  ).

Drew Karpyshyn is a Canadian science fiction writer and video game writer. He was the head writer of the video game called Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. My kids have not played that one, but it sounds well regarded in some of the posts I have seen here and there among our members? :?

Anyway, the book begins with the man who will be Darth Bane working as a quasi-slave in the mines of a dirt ball of a world. He grew up being abused by his father, and is regularly given a hard time by the other miners. The mine is backbreaking work, so he has grown extremely strong. And he is filled with rage and hatred.

He also has a bone to pick with the Republic, as they turn away from the quasi-slavery and horrible working conditions he labors under to give them a much needed mineral. Many people on the Outer Rim worlds hate the Republic for that and similar reasons.

This is a time when the Galaxy is rent in a huge war between the Republic and its Jedi, and armies and armadas belonging to the Sith, who get many recruits from the Outer Rim.

The Sith are held together by an agreement wrought by one Sith Lord - and that agreement is hard to hold together with all of that ambition and all of those egos - like herding cats. But they hold together enough to form some Sith acadamies and joint armies/armadas.

Anyway, Dessel has to flee from the mining world after an ugly incident of self-protection. He joins one of the Sith armies, and that is the first step to becoming the greatest badass the galaxy will ever see. 8) :D

Through playing the Knights of the Old Republic games, I've developed a fascination with Sith history, so I've been seriously considering the Darth Bane novel. I'm glad it's fairly good; I shall give it a go...when I have chance to read anything other than the rubbish I'm meant to be studying.

My older son has also read it now, and we three are agreed that is a better than average Star Wars book, and that also Darth Bane makes the Emperor look like a little fuzzy kitten in comparison.

Peace is a lie. There is only passion.
Through Passion I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory my chains are broken.

Darth Revan makes all other Sith look like cissies. :P

The real Darth Revan, that is, not the Watch member. Revan is the first documented bearer of the title 'Darth', and it's theorised that he actually created the word. He also came closer to conquering the galaxy than anyone, until Palpatine.

duchess, did you read the Thrawn books? Just wondering how this compares...
All lies and jest
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest
