Yeah. . . I picked up on that too! And hilarous allusion to (near) fatal beatings. . .

I can thnk of lots of people who could have used a few (near) fatal beatings in their lives. There are just some things in a polite society you should not be able to do without getting the tar kicked out of you.

Of course, we don't live in a polite society.

And anyway, even if I'd known what would have happened, I still would have let him beat me up. I just would have driven to the ER immediately instead of waiting.

Haha, yes, for some things. If I get away from real basics, I'm screwed. :D Did a couple of years of it at school, and of course I speak Afrikaans (living in South Africa) which is also largely a germanic language, so there are similarities. Can get by in Dutch and Flemish too, which are even more similar.

I'm jealous. I'm really into languages, and can only do Spanish and a little German.

Since I learned Afrikaans at the same time as I did English (i.e. from birth), languages that share origins with it come easily to me. I struggle a lot more with the Romance languages.

Hell, my maternal grandmother was Belgian, and my mother was born there, but my French is essentially non-existant apart from a few basic vocab words. (I can read it fractionally better, but literally only fractionally. Regret not cadging proper lessons from them when I had the chance. *sigh*)

I speak English, American English. However I can swear up a storm in quite a number of languages including German, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Tagalog, Japanese and Russian.
