Thank you for all the welcomes! This really seems to be a site with positive vibes.

I have looked around some on the 'Watch, but I am refraining from getting too involved for fear I will see something that will spoil the surprises! I REALLY appreciate the judicious use of the spoiler black bars, I know I have been spared many secrets by them. Why do your eyes automatically go directly to the one sentence on the whole page that you don't want to see? :-)

After I read The White Gold Wielder, I will haunt the First and Second Chronicle threads; there are so many interpretations and interesting things to know/see/talk about!

Ooo...something I always forget about...
If you are avoiding spoilers, don't use the "View all Posts by" link in someone's profile. It's pulls up a list of posts in reverse order for that poster with a sentence or two of the post included. If I am remembering correctly, spoiler tags don't work in that preview window for some reason...

Yes, you are correct. It shows the sentence without the spoiler tags. :(

Hi, everyone, I'm new

Post by cbarkley »

I've been meaning to contribute to this site for a long time. I guess I just needed an invitation from Jay. So here I am. To tell you a little about myself, I am a professor at Palomar College. I have been reading and teaching Donaldson's works for about 30 years now. I met him for the first time when I gave a paper at Mythcon in which I claimed he was the natural heir to Tolkien. I was terribly nervous when I found out he was going to be in my audience. Lucky for me, he was not critical.
So from that time until just this year, I have been working on a book on his "Chronicles" novels. I had wanted until the 3rd and Last Chronicles was published but he was just taking too much time. I annoyed him every time he visits Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego for a book signing by asking him when he would finally get around to finishing the Chronicles. Thank goodness he is more than half through.
Anyway, my book is coming out next month, so check it out--

Stephen R. Donaldson and the Modern Epic Vision: A Critical Study of the "Chronicles" Novels.

I wanted to call it Eye of the Paradox. You all would have known exactly what that meant, but the publishers were afraid most people would not, so they prevailed into talking me into changing the name to the mouthful above. It should be available by the end of this month. I would love to hear from Donaldson fans what you think of my work.

I look forward to hearing from you all.

What can you tell me about the new audio tapes?

Are the films absolutely dead in the water?

I look forward to your thoughts on the Chronicles, cbarkley. Hopefully your book will be available in Canada at the same time as in the U.S.

I take it you must have been one of the first and few from academia to view Donaldson as an author worthy of scholarly study, not as just some guy pumping out the latest bestselling fodder.

SRD's website says the films are dead, and I haven't read anything new to contradict that. Any film adaptation remains a pipe dream, and I for one am very sad about that. And bitter, in a "hellfire and damnation!" kind of way.

To Wyldewode,
Actually it was my Tolkien professor at UCR who recommended Donaldson to me. Who first suggested that you read the books?

Hail and welcome cbarkley. :D
You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.

In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.

He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.

Welcome, cbarkley! We're glad to have you with us.

Re: "new audio tapes" - I assume you mean the audio productions by Scott Brick. IMHO they're absolute wonderful, a must-have. TPTP comes out April 1st, and I'm very much looking forward to it.

i'd have to say that the dissections are pretty interesting cb. a lot of intelligent and thoughtful work goes into them.
