Insomnia
Saw that there wasnt a thread on this one yet, I enjoyed this story very much. It would make a good film as well.
Wide Eyed Stupid
I think it's a really underappreciated book. It can be somewhat slow, but the ending is just fantastic.

No, the rest of the book makes the book. The ending is the icing on the cake.

For the most part, my biggest complaint with SK is that he typically doesn't know how to end a damn story. Most of the time they just kinda splutter to a halt. Occasionally, he gets 'em just right, like It, Pet Sematary, arguably the Dark Tower books, etc.

Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life

The end of It was my favorite of his stories. I guess because I can totally relate. Things about my childhood that I thought I would never forget have drifted from my memory. Every once in a while I'll get a flash of a memory and such and remember. So after they got all the memories back temporarily and then started to lose them again as well as the names of some of the people, it made me very sad. Then again, I've always been a packrat for nostalgia.
I guess that is why Alzheimer's strikes me as an especially sad thing.
But sure, prior to that is another of his "let's blow up this town and tell about what happened to everyone in it." And the bike ride at the end was a little cheesy.

yah i loved Insomnia too. ralph was awesome. jeeze. i think i may need to read that one again. it's been a while.
i like the bike riding in the end of It too.
and yeah cag, i sooo know what you mean about the memory thing.
i love those little flashes of childhood memories. some are scary and
some are lovely.
bizarrely, i remember every name of those kids in school who
were mean to me. it's my friends' names i have a hard time with
most of the time.

cause... i'm from Kentucky

i'd like to say i hope they're both fat, have a thousand kids, live in trailer parks with alchoholic husbands, and watch jerry springer re-runs...
but honestly, i don't.
what i really hope is that they think of ME from time to time and wish
they hadn't been such bitches.

I'm about 200 pages in so far, and I gotta say this is the worst SK of the half dozen or so that I've read. Old geezers eating mac'n cheese while the watch the news? Sitting on the bench crying about getting old? Seeing the pharmacist so that we--the readers--can get an infodump about insomnia? Ugh. I don't see the allure here.
I'm sure it will get better ... SK always does. But man is it slow. And a bit preachy on the abortion subject, making pro-lifers seem like crazy idiots.

It's been about 10 years since I read Insomnia, but it was a book I enjoyed tremendously. Once it gets going it's just so surreally trippy.

The auras are cool. I'm going to finish it because I trust that it will get better. But the pacing is off. And it's irritating that all the good guys are Democrats who love and care for their neighbors, while all the bad guys are Republicans who are batshit crazy caricatures.
