Glad I found this place!

Post by Fireflii »

I am, just as I am sure most people here are, a true fan of the Unbeliever series of books.

My original 6 copies of the first two chronicles are well-worn and dog-eared and have probably been read at least 15 times by me if not more. I tend to get them out during the summer months and reread them and enjoy the story as much as I did the first time I read it.

I am just now reading the Last Chronicles (the first two books) for the second time since I just finished the first books again and was searching for info on when the third book is coming out when I stumbled across references to Kevin's Watch. And therefore ... here I am!

I am once again a college student since in the big lay-off of 2008-2009 my job got downsized. I was working as the IT Coordinator at a compnay taking care of all their computing needs and writing database modules to extend their manufacturing software. Apparently I served them too well because I was one of the last higher paid positions to go LOL. In any case, since I was self-taught and did not have a degree in Database Management/Admin and my company was TAA-eligible, I am back in school getting that degree before heading back out into the workforce.

I would say that not working and just going to college gives me more time to read (and reread) but that is probably not true. I have not been without a job for over 20 years so to me, this was a major adjustment. I just made my schoolwork my job though and I am maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

It is a pleasure to find others out there that enjoy Mr. Donaldson's writings as much as I do.

Welcome!
In case you didn't notice, there's a lot of stuff here [just the pure chapter dissections the Covenant books probably runs into thousands of posts all by itself].
But you don't have to read it all...jump in, enjoy.

Thank you. I first read Lord Fouls Bane about 20 years ago. The Convenant series I liked the best, although The Mirror of her Dreams and A Man Rides Through were great, too. I was looking to find out when his next book is out and came across this website.

Errrm, idiotic? Clearly it wasn't ideal and left me feeling rather at sea for much of the time - I wouldn't particularly recommend it, especially as I already know that I am going to have to reread them again now once I've reread the First Two Chronicles to see how much more I get out of them.

To be fair, Runes wasn't too bad as the set up was not highly dependent on a detailed knowledge of the earlier works, but once into Fatal Revenant which (it appears to me) draws more heavily on the earlier mythology, I was left floundering at times... but also drawn back to the first books again. :D
For what it's worth, I've now reached Runes in my re-reading and I can confirm that my earlier decision to read it without any preparation after a 20 year hiatus was, indeed, idiotic.

There is also the fact that I originally approached it with a vague sense of detached interest more than anything. Sort of "I wonder what all that fuss was that I made at the time, 20 years ago when I read the First Chronicles." There was interest, but no real excitement at discovering Runes in the bookshop.

This time, after rereading both First and Second Chronicles, I am approaching with a keen sense of anticipation (even though I only read it a year or so ago) and excitement that was quite lacking before.

And as I read the early sections I do find there is a lot of satisfaction to be obtained from being back in the Donaldson world. I suspect that, due to my earlier relative lack of immersion, I did Runes a real disservice when I read it. The early sections (pre-summoning) are great - but then I've always found the real world sections fascinating. Now that I'm back "in tune" with Donaldson's style and vocab, I love it.

And having the earlier Chronicles fresh in my mind certainly helps me pick up on the various clues/hints/crumbs left by SRD, which, unlike any of his earlier TC books, seem to be crucial to reading the Last Chronicles.

And finally, the Dissections sections on the Watch add to the experience immensely.

Wayfriend, of the ones I've looked at so far, can I particularly single out your review of the summoning chapter, "I am content". It is so well put together and thought provoking. Together with the amplification provided by Zarathustra (Malik23 - can you change a Username? I was so dull in the original choice of mine!)

Just a shame I wasn't around to join in with the Dissections threads at the time! :(

Thanks to all who commit their valuable time to make the Watch a great place to visit. :D

Why thanks, Barnetto. For the compliment, but more really for getting back to us and relating your experiences.

I look forward to your contributions when we dissect AATE.

Hi, everyone. I'm new. Well, not really. See the join date? Apparently I just never posted anything. Wish I could remember why. I did remember my name and password though! Better late than never? :D

I'm from Cornwall, England. Love SRD's books but I'm sure you could have guessed that. :P Read the First and Second Chronicles...umm, about 7 years ago, I suppose. I asked my history teacher to recommend me some fantasy and Thomas Covenant was top of his list (a list that also included the line 'not the Gap series' in capital letters! Don't know if he just didn't like them or decided that they were unsuitable for my delicate 15 year old self!). My copies of the Chronicles have been read many many times since then. And are about to come down from the shelf for another go. A little after first reading TC I ignored my teacher's usually excellent advice and found myself a copy of The Real Story. Loved it (in a hideously disturbed kind of way) and got Forbidden Knowledge from the library. Hated it and gave up. Read Mordant's Need and loved it. A few years later read The Real Story again. Still loved it. Forced myself through Forbidden Knowledge. Got to the end of Chaos and Order. Took me forever to get hold this This Day... . Too long and I gave up. A few weeks ago I was listening to Wagner's Ring. Picked up The Real Story again. Loved it as much as ever. Found/ordered the rest of the series. Finished a week ago in an exhausted daze! Worth every second of it. :D

The short version: it took me a while in some cases but there isn't much that SRD has written that I don't like.

Well, I got one post at least. That's better than I did the last time I was lurking around here.

Welcome (back) (or something) to the Watch HorizonScan. :D

Love Cornwall. Spent some time near Mawnan Smith...oh...quite a few years ago now.

Think the Gap is SRD's best writing. Join in, stop lurking...plenty to see and say here. ;)
