well i will try book 1 this weekend. i just usually don't like science fiction. too much of it bogs down on trying to explain how the science is possible. i just want a good story, i am willing to believe in space flight, lasers and wookies. :)

No wookies in the GAP books, sorry. But SRD spends very little time explaining the science, so that should make up for it. ;)

good. i always was of two minds with Chricton. enjoye dthe story parts of hi swriting, then would bogged down with his explanations. kind of like the attempts to rationalize Superman's powers...

Yeah, the final book of the Gap series is one of the most intense books certainly of his career thus far, but is definitely in competition with at least two other books I can think of.
It's true that it does take a couple books to really ratchet up the excitement. I remember when originally released, I read the first one going, "Oh.......well, I suppose I'll see where this is going and see if it improves." The second book is definitely an improvement, and it just keeps getting stronger from there. But the first one isn't bad. It just isn't especially likable right off the bat. It is definitely his most well crafted story, in my opinion. While Covenant goes for the heart, the Gap goes for the brain (and the throat :) ).
And I'm pretty much feel the same about reading about spaceships and stuff, although I am fond of watching movies/television with this.

Overall...I bounce around on that...
It doesn't really build up steam till 2/3rd through book 2, I think. Fortunately book 1 is really short, so doesn't take long to get there...and I can't say enough good things about 3,4,5.
While that's definitely true, my favorite individual scene is Warden's at the end of Forbidden Knowledge. His little speech stuck with me :)

I'll concede that. For me it only becomes really intense in book 3. But from there on out, it's edge of your seat stuff. Every time I read it.

I don't think I've ever read a series that kept me on the edge of my seat as consistently and for so long as the Gap. Those last three books just keep building and building and building.

Anybody notice that we've turned this into a 2-page thread and the original poster still hasn't been back?

Well, you can post pretty much anything in a thread named "Hi" and not be off topic.

Example:

"Hi"
"Hi. You should go read the Gap."
"I remember when I read the Gap."
"The Gap was awesome. I like from the third book onwards best."
"Hey, where'd the new guy go?"
