Another hello

Post by Ananda »

I've been snooping on this forum for the last couple of months and finally couldn't resist the temptation to discuss some of the topics, so I've made a login.

I read the first two series back in '83 when I was 14. I was very lucky then as I picked up the series at the exact right time- no waiting two more years for the end of the story! I think I read the books a couple of times in my teens and I read Mordant's Need when that came out as well. However, I set the Land aside since then and only got the bug to read it again this year when I saw that SRD had written a new series.

This is probably the wrong place to say it, but I did not initially jump at the chance to read more about the Land. In fact, I blew the new books off as interesting, but nothing I was going to read. It was one of those things where I didn't want to ruin my fond memories by trying to enjoy something as an adult that I had enjoyed as a teen. Well, my curiosity got the better of me and I dusted off the old books and got hooked again.

I've read through quite a bit of the content here and, just for the record, I state now that I really like Linden. Sorry THOOLAH members. :P As a teenage girl, I loved that there was a female character in a lead role. As a grown woman, I still enjoy her. But, it's not just that- she's interesting as a person (I do admit that she is a bit over the top with her whining at times, though!). To make myself even more controversial in my initial posting, I will say that I like her better than Covenant. So, I am very happy about Linden being the main character in the new series.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to participating in some discussion.

Hail Ananda,

Welcome to the Watch!

As a member of THOOLAH I have to say that while your admiration for the Chronicles to be commended, I relish the opportunity to apply a corrective to your misguided position in relation to Linden. Come visit with the enlightened members of this forum and you may begin to understand the error of your ways

Join in anywhere. Resurrect old threads. Start new topics. You'll already know that the folks here are as a friendly (if a bit weird :P ) a bunch as you're likely to meet on the Net, get stuck in and you'll soon feel at home.

Be Welcome and True!

Welcome Ananda. A few others have mentioned their hesitance to dive into the new Quadrilogy, because they were afraid of ruining their enjoyment of the First and Second Chronicles, so you're not alone there.

Be Welcome to the Watch, Ananda.
Be Well Come and True.

As ussusimiel says, jump in anywhere. We have topics that cover just about anything you can think of, both regarding SRD and non-SRD topics. Just be careful of final chrons spoilers, as Runes and FR are pretty much considered open topic now, with the release of AATE.

Wow- you are radical  . Welcome, and I look forward to you defending your position in the Last Chrons forum :P . Personally, I love the Last Chrons, but wouldn't go so far as to say I prefer Linden over Covenant.

Thank you for the kind welcomes. I'm definitely in the pro-Linden camp. I think that even Covenant lives in his head now and does his share of ...well, whatever you want to call his post-timewarden, neo-don't touch me turmoil, but it seems more a function of SRD's current writing style than specific to a single character. I do enjoy how he has changed as a writer, too. Though, I could do without the "oh, insert name here" thing. While I do love the books, one thing I have to say is that SRD is not good at writing any type of modern dialogue! It just comes out so stilted. He's great with his fantasy world formal-speak, though.

I saw the photos of your recent meeting with SRD in the US. That looked like a great time.

And, lastly, no I haven't read the Gap series yet. I plan to, though.

Those who have actually talked to him may be able to confirm or deny, but I get the sense his dialogue is quite un-modern naturally. Certainly in the GI, he still throws out words like fecund, and he praised another author (Erikson) by he "afflicts me with awe." I mean, that sounds badass, but who says that?

Btw, this

Yes, the dialog in all the Covenant books is "operatic" and this is by design. SRD intentionally does this as part of establishing the tone of the Land. Notice that the dialog during the portions that take place in Covenant's / Linden's "real" world are not as arcane. Not necessarily normal modern English, but much closer than style of language used in the Land.

As someone who has spoken with SRD briefly at promotional signings and at Elohimfest, I can attest that his conversational vocabulary is normal modern English, albeit that of an educated and articulate person.

He has also written some fairly conventional modern dialog in the four mysteries of The Man Who... series.
