I read the 1st and 2nd Chronicles when they first came out back in the 70s and 80s. Really liked em'.

So in January of this year, my son was reading a battered hard cover book that he had gotten from his school library.

I said, "Whatcha reading? He said that I wouldn't like it, that it was fiction, that it nothing to do with career or self-improvement, and that he didn't want to talk about it. But I caught a glimpse of the arch, and the river, and the dark orange, and said, "Covenant". His eyes perked up, and he said, "You know Thomas Covenant?" I said, "We're best friends." (Cue music)

So now, 2 and a half months later, my son and I have something to talk about. We've talked about The Land, Foul himself, TC, The 2nd Chronicles, Linden, everything. Now I am reading the Last Chronicles, and he is taking time off from The Land.

I lent my son the Chronicles, and he wasn't overly impressed. He lent me the two mirror books, and I wasn't overly impressed. Oh well

Isn't it wonderful to find that you actually have something in common with your child that you can talk about?

Out kids aren't old enough to read TCoTC yet; I will introduce them at the appropriate time, however, so that they get to see what quality literature is like.

May I ask - how old are they? Old enough to read at all?

9 and 11, so chapter 5 of Lord Foul's Bane is a definite no-go.

I think Beorn read the chrons at age ten, but a lot flew over his head anyway. Especially with his aspergers...

He still really enjoyed the books, and appreciated them even more upon reread several years later.

Think I started them at around 12 / 13. It's not like it's graphic or anything.

I don't even remember how old I was, likely something around 9-10.

Of course, it's hard to predict how reading something or not and at a certain age may influence a person, but waiting for some appropriate time is risky. By the time you decide to show them what quality literature is like they may have a formed taste for some very different literature, or for no literature at all.

Both my sons, while young teens, read the series shortly after I did. They're grown now, but we still wish we could visit The Land other than in our imaginations....

I read them the summer I turned 13. So probably started at 12. A *lot* flew over my head. But I liked the fantasy element. Re-reading them a few years later was a different experience, and re-reading them as an adult, I *finally* got almost all of it processed.
