All That I Am, by Anna Funder.

I just wrote a whole post about the book but deleted it because I couldn't express myself properly. (That's happening a lot lately. :? ) Something about how scary it is, the parallels between pre Third Reich Germany and our current world. Whistle blowers arrested for treason, gathering of data on dissidents, surveillance. We have the means, and the laws on the books. Just takes the mad (er) folk to gain power and push it into darker territory.

Ah, anyway, the novel's about political and cultural resistance in Germany between the first and second world wars. And much more. I like the way Anna Funder writes. Condensed, meaningful, resonating.

I always consider it a crossroads of sorts. Kinda like how Syria reminds me of the Slavic incident that started World War I. Maybe it will tip into something disastrous, maybe not. Unfortunately, it's out of our hands.

Just finished my recent John Crowley binge. Might finish some books I started before hand now... nah, I'll just start a bunch more :P

Finished my Chippewa short course  and went back to Quiet. I might actually finish it this time! :S And then I can get back to reading fiction for awhile. My TBR pile is ridiculous -- I still have 6 books on my nightstand from last year's WFC book bag, and I hesitate to even look at the Kindle...

Oh, I did read Louise Erdrich's The Round House in the interim. It was quite good.

The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell.

Oh? Lemme know what it's like. I love The Beach, but didn't really enjoy Tesseract much. Turns out he was the writer for 28 Days Later too, which was obviously brilliant.

(Friend of mine in the UK was at school with him.)

Let's see here... I'll be reading Goethe's Faust... Part I AND Part II... I'm no illiterate redneck.

I'll also be finishing a book with four of D H Lawrence's 'short novels' (soo...short stories) and a book of Dostoevsky's short fiction, which includes Notes From the Underground....

I'm also reading *cough* Alan Ginsberg's Howl and Other Poems

Reader: What was that, Orlion?

Ahhh! Is that the bittersweet whispering sound of the pages of books by hipster wastrels being turned

Now, for my next trick, to get Orlion to read some Kenny Goldsmith, Caroline Bergvalle and Ron Silliman

Read Sword Song this weekend, now The Burning Land.

One more to go in this series.

(Edit: Oh, it looks like book 7 is out, or nearly out.)

Sybil, Flora Rheta Schreiber.

Not sure why, was a buck so I picked it up. Heart-warming story of childhood torture and DID. Must line up something light and fluffy after this. I have Geraldine Brooks' Year of Wonders on my coffee table, but I think that's about the Plague so not exactly fluffy. Reaper's Gale is also queued up but that's not really light. Maybe I'll just surf Facebook or continue learning Spanish on my phone app. Yo soy mujer, hear me roar...
