That is one very beautiful ship. And I would agree this would be within the imagination of a modern American woman, such as Linden Avery.

However, I enjoy reading Micheal Moorcock, from time to time. And the artist Rodney Matthews has many paintings either inspired or rendered directly from Moorcock story text.

This will illustrate the more dreamlike quality of the fantasy Giantship I had in mind.
A large village can be seen in this one:

Of course a ship built from granite would work, simply because it is set in a fantasy dreamland.
But then, on the back cover of my First and Second Chronicles, it says that Stephen Donaldson, wields symbols powerfully. Therefore, my book says it's symbolic.

I suspect that there may be a way to deconstruct the symbolism.
Without giving away spoilers, there is a sea tale that tells of a sinking ship involving Pitchwife and his Father-in-law. Needless to say, the ship remained afloat. Therein might lie an answer.

Stone and Sea, wee little human! Many a thing have we been named during our days, but ne'er symbols erenow! Is not the weight of my nine-foot glaive real in my grasp? Or this cataphract upon my shoulders? Did we cross the broad seas and the perils of Soulbiter aboard a mere metaphor? Did poor Moire Squareset become gobbled alive by a puff of mental wind? 8O

The Hird bids you welcome, but the Ironhand will in good sooth argue for her very solid and bullheaded reality as well. :P

In the Summonsing, Dura Fairflank mentioned she has yet to read the Last Chronicles, Frostheart. So she probably wouldn't understand references to Moire Squareset or the Ironhand--not yet, anyway.

This might fix it:
Did poor Grimmand Honninscrave become gobbled alive by a puff of mental wind, only to be crushed by an imaginary desert predator?
The Hird bids you welcome, but the First will in good sooth argue for her very solid and bullheaded reality as well. (Giant question: Is a Search too formal to be a hird?)

8O ... you really must tell me what I'd said to make you think I'm a she.
(... assuming I hadn't activated my graveler symbol. ;))

Well,
In Lord Foul's Bane was wrote:The man who had been holding the horse touched Covenant's knee to get his attention. "Her name is Dura - Dura Fairflank. I have trained her well. She is as good as a Ranyhyn," he boasted."
.. and so I, too, rather assumed you were a she.

Well, well! - curiouser and curiouser.

When I was registering I had not thought of a username. When asked for one I grabbed the First Chronicles and did a quick scan of the index. The name Dura Fairflank made me think of the name Douglas Fairbanks - which I liked.

Oh well, I'll leave it as it is for now. If it causes any future confusion I'm hoping I can ask an administrator to change it to a masculine username - which would save a cumbersome re-registering.

Apologies to the OP for derailing this thread

You are now among Chronicles-lovers, and no lapse will go unnoticed! :)

And I think you can just edit your name in your profile.

You can.

But why bother?
Haven't we reached the point where people can be called Loretta if they want to?

the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.
