Wosbald's Intro

Post by Wosbald »

+JMJ+

Hey all,

I first read the 1st and 2nd Chronicles in high school back in the mid-80's. I was thrilled when I heard that SRD was returning to the series. I read the TROTE and FR when they came out, but got sidetracked from the series for a few years, studying (informally) philosophy and theology. I started the new series from scratch a few months ago and am now about 100 pages through TLD. I am in awe, as the 3rd Chron is shaping up to be the best, though probably the least accessible, of the bunch. What started off seemingly ambling in the first two books started paying off in spades in AATE. SRD's art of patient, nuanced and plaintive storytelling has obviously matured to a mastercraft level.

I have the Gap cycle and Mordant's Need but have yet to tear into them.

I'm not very exciting and not particularly loquacious, though I hope to occasionally contribute something of modest worth.

Hail and welcome, Wosbald!
Please make yourself at home here!

There's lots of topics concerning Donaldson's works here, so don't be shy and dive in and post wherever you want to, depending on what you've read.

Most of the SRD forums are self-explanatory by their titles, but I would like to point out that discussions of Donaldson's short stories and of his "The Man Who" mysteries can be found in the forum General SRD Discussion and Other Works.

As for the basically non-Donaldson parts of the Watch, here's some other areas you may be interested in:

The Loresraat - science/technology
The Galley - cooking
Vespers - music appreciation
Doriendor Corishev - history
The Close - religion/philosophy
The Hall of Gifts - creative writing
Hile Troy's Think-Tank - politics/current events

Of course, there's also the games to play while In Pursuit Of Mallory, and try to stop by The Chronicles Art Gallery--I think you'll be glad you did!

And here is a thread for keeping up with what areas are newest in appearance or recent popularity: Trending on the Watch - What's New & What's Hot!

Please feel free to join in posting about whatever interests you, Wosbald!

(I agree with you that the Last Chronicles are great. I also highly recommend Mordant's Need.)

Be Welcome to the Watch, Wosbald.
Be Well Come and True.

Cord Hurn did an awesome job of introducing you to the different areas of the Watch. The only thing I would add is to beware of TLD spoilers should you go in to The Last Chrons forum.

Welcome to the Watch, Wosbald. Greetings to you!

I like your description of:

Welcome to the Watch, Wosbald. Get drawn in, share your thoughts, maybe find the answers to life's most important questions. Like: Linden, great hero, or greatest hero? And: What is peter thinking today?

Maybe we need to start the "What is vraith saying today?" thread for vraith and all talk about him...
He would love that, right? Maybe. Maybe not.

Umm, so, you see, Wosbald, we are the crazy characters who will encounter you on Kevin's Watch...

Indeed, Welcome to the Watch, Wosbald!

Patient, nuanced and plaintive storytelling is mainly in the writing, of course, but it also requires an attentive and simpatico reader. That you have risen to that call for the Last Chrons (where many seem to have missed the qualities you so accurately name) bodes well for you here.

Do read the Gap series. It is probably SRD's best work, but will require patience as much or more than you've already noted. However, the payoff for sticking with it is huge.

You've been greeted by a pretty wide variety of Watchers...with lots more regulars out there. It is amazing what you can learn about people over time by reading their posts. That too is worth doing. This is an amazing group of people...here on the web and when various subsets meet in real life.

May you thrive here...and contribute!

Hello Wosbald. :D

Yeah, the Gap books are OK, but I much prefer Mordant's Need !! Glad to see you are enjoying the 3rd Chrons. :)
