A newbie from England

Post by Iolanthe »

Hello all,

Just introducing myself. In 1983 I bought the omnibus edition of the 1st Chronicles from a Book Club that I then belonged to. I was immediately drawn into this wonderful world that is The Land. I then discovered that there were more books, and purchased the first two parts of the 2nd Chronicles - I had to wait for the third to be published.

Then, about three years ago whilst idling on the internet I discovered the Stephen Donaldson website, and this led me to Kevin's Watch, and the discovery that there was a 3rd Chronicle. The next day I bought the 1st and 2nd book and when AATE was announced I put in an advance order. Now I wait again for the last book.

I have lurked on the message boards for the last three years, reading the posts, and gaining a much better insight into the books, which I have now read many times. For that I thank you. It is doubtful whether I shall have anything of interest to add, not having such an analytical mind as some of you obviously have, but I shall enjoy belonging to a group of people with the same interest as myself.

I don't really have a favourite character - I love them all, except the real baddies and LF of course, but I did have a particular liking for the Mahdoubt, all the Haruchi, Nom, Saltheart Foamfollower - need I go on?

Just to finish, I am female and almost 60, perhaps not your average forum member, but young in heart

Agreed. I myself feel as though I occupy a wide variety of ages.

Thanks for the welcomes. There is so much more to this site than I realised. Love the stores! Plenty to read while I wait for TFD.

Welcome, Iolanthe. Please do contribute. Even if you have nothing new to say, there are plenty of us who like it when people respond "Me too!". :) (We know it's a weakness --but the weakness is so strong!)

Thanks Wayfriend. I'll have a go when I have something useful to say.

:LOLS: Welcome to the Watch. 3 years lurking? Welcome indeed.

Don't you dare disappear again. And remember, you don't have to only talk about the books...there's hundreds of things to talk about here.

Thanks Menolly. I saw a thread somewhere about what our names mean but can't for the life of me find it now. Iolanthe was of course a character in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta of the same name. She was banished to a pond for marrying a mortal. There were so many Chronicle names already on here and I didn't fancy looking through them all to see which hadn't been used, so I plumped for this one. I forgot to say that she was a fairy, but certainly not a soppy one.

Iolanthe- welcome. I second your name and avatar being lovely. Sounds a good story. I definitely thought of a small character from "The Return of the King," called Ioreth and thought you might be deriving the name partially from her.
...I'll have a go when I have something useful to say.
...But the above quote reassures me that in at least one aspect, you are much unlike that character.

Y'all done cracked me up. Thanks for that one.
