Roger Zelazny's Amber Series

Post by Corwin »

I see that most of this topic has been concerning vehicles for personal transport, but if any of you have read Zelazny's Chronicles of amber, you know that they, for destinational purposes, are the fastest and most efficient means of transport, allowing almost instantaneous transit from point A to B

I agree with Corwin. :) Amberites can walk between alternate realities. Totally badass.

Walking the pattern takes time though, and a misstep can be dangerous.

Jumping between a-dragonback only takes three seconds, as long as you have a clear visualization... ;)

Heh, true, Menolly. :) But anyone who successfully walks the Pattern by default has to be a master of Shadow. That has to count for something.

True 'nuff.

And if you can get a sibling to answer a call through a Trump, well then you can just be pulled from one Shadow to another in less than a blink.

(if I'm remembering correctly. It's been at least two decades since I've looked at any Amber)

Heh, I desperately wanted one of those bikes Leia rode towards the end of Return of the Jedi when I first saw it as a 23 year old in 1983 on the big screen...

Add the word "already" and it's Terry Pratchett.

That reminds me of a Terry Pratchett line about the only force that moves more quickly than light: Monarchy. Whenever a Monarch dies, Monarchy instantaneously travels from him/her to their heir, no matter what distance may lie between the two. Attempts to create a method of communication through the careful torturing of Kings have been unsuccessful.

Has anyone mentioned the transporter yet?

Also, the "instant hole" in the Looney Tunes cartoon is a rocker as well.

I second that vote for the SDF-1.

If I had that thing, and a sufficient supply of Protoculture, the Galaxy would be mine... er, I mean, I'd never be late for work again.
